Long story short, went for afternoon tea yesterday and ate a few little (very sweet ) cakes. I very very rarely eat sugary things and never add sugar to anything I make/eat so I'm not used to eating much of it.
Anyway this morning I have woken up with a sore and cramping bowel, acid reflux and a thumping racing heart. What the heck?

And how do I get rid of this feeling?

Not sure but maybe ask a pharmacist & see if there is anything that you can take.

Scarlett, does it affect you the following day? I felt ok-ish last night

Sounds like me when i accidentally eat wheat foods (I'm celiac), I always get the racing heart and weird chest feelings the next day, but its likely the unaccustomed sweet cake intake did it for you.
Acid reflux can trigger palpitations and rapid heart beat because the acid can irritate the vagus nerve which lies alongside the oesophagus, the vagus nerve controls heart rate and lots of other things. A glass of Andrews Liver Salts seems to help.

not the same symptoms I'm afraid i get a banging head ache. i love sweets but its not worth the pain.

Well, I'm back. After feeling really lousy all day - stomach pain, nausea etc - I was violently sick late afternoon. It was truly horrendous.
So, I don't know if the high sugar intake would have done that to me or whether it was a bug, but thank goodness I'm feeling a lot better today. Thanks for all your comments x
