Know I'm getting old but went to GP tired aching misery guts etc, blood test
revealed high calcium (GP thinks it may be hyperparathyroidism and I agree)
and a high haemoglobin 16.9. Have had appt for endcrinologist middle of next month and now have had an appt to haematologist also middle June to go to
haematology and oncology dept. Please tell me I am shitting myself needlessly thanks in advance

Hi 2old, I don't know, but I am interested in this as I am awaiting similar blood test results, so am bumping in the hope someone else who knows will join in! In the meantime, would you mind telling me more about your symptoms cos I am nosey so I can compare them to mine?!

tabulahrasa · 14/05/2012 00:20

One of the things that high calcium levels can indicate is tumours, but thyroid is more common and if you and the GP think that's what it is then it more than likely is, but your GP would be doing you a disservice if they didn't refer you to oncology for the remote possibility that it is something more serious.

Thanks ladies for your replies.
tabulahrasa, yes I think my GP is thorough but thinking about it in non-panic mode, the haematologist looks at results and then directs you to the right consultant (friend v anaemic dx with pernicious anaemia went there) So i'm not to freak out.
BurningBridges Where do I start,
1)feeling unwell but not really ill for past 18 months (fluish)
2)aching joints mainly in limbs
3)indigestion
4)Non stop piddling & thirsty
5)lethargic (lazy)
6)down in the dumps (I used to be so upbeat) grumpy.
7)can't be arsed
8)abdo pain
As you can see nothing really specific but I feel like rubbish, and GP agrees that with the high calcium it is probably hyperparathyroidism. It is known as "moans, groans, bones, stones and psychiatric overtones" disease sums me up!
Caused by adenomas on the parathyroid gland but only 0.5% malignant phew. My high haemoglobin is probably unconnected. Starting 24hr wee collection LOL. Hope this helps, let me know and good luck

my mum had her parathyroid out and all is well Smile. A nice, easy solution to crappy symptoms.

BurningBridges · 14/05/2012 17:12

Thanks for that, interesting. But what sort of abdominal pain and where?

Just to explain all my demands (!) I've had abdominal pain, aches in ribs and in particular underarms and down arms for about 9 months. I've had all sorts of tests, and am due to see GP again this Friday. I know she tested for a calcium a few weeks ago; maybe I am clutching at straws but maybe its one of the things GP should be considering. And yes your GP is thorough, sounds good.

Thanks {bit embarrassed to keep asking emoticon}

I have lower abdo pain which could be bladder stones but you can have upper pain by the spleen. I have googled it naughty the site i went on was American Dr Norman (sorry I can't link too old) and it lists all symptoms and is very reassuring. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for your reply and please ask all you want I'll do my best although having left the NHS YEARS ago.
booblies thanks your mum gives hope to an old miseryguts. 3 weeks 'til appt
