Posting for a friend - she had the op yesterday and is in agony despite painkillers - has anyone found anything else that helps to ease the pain and reduce the bloating or does it just have to take its course?

I think she should see a doctor if it is anything worse than bad period pain

no, it's the gas from the laparoscopy - it hurts while it dissipates!

I had the same last week after a laparoscopy. I drank peppermint tea and took co codamol and ibuprofen. It took a few days to dissipate but it hurt like hell in the meantime! Thought my lung had collapsed the first night as i couldnt breathe properly and it was so painful!

Yeah, that's where my friend is right now. So nothing helped in the first couple of days?

Not really Sad Because the gas is just trapped in the body cavity it needs to be absorbed by the cells in the body. Im not really sure why i drank peppermint tea. My mum made it for me but thinking back i dont think it helped at all.
According to wikipedia: Not all of the CO2 introduced into the abdominal cavity is removed through the incisions during surgery. Gas tends to rise, and when a pocket of CO2 rises in the abdomen, it pushes against the diaphragm (the muscle that separates the abdominal from the thoracic cavities and facilitates breathing), and can exert pressure on the phrenic nerve. This produces a sensation of pain that may extend to the patient's shoulders.

I took a Tramadol for two nights after laparascopic surgery and shoulder pain last week. Wasn't as bad as your friend's tho. I did sleep after the Tramadol, tho don't know if cos helped pain or doped meSmile. Mine went after a couple of days anyway tho, if that helps

Thanks - I think she's just going to have to live through it for the next couple of days by the sound of it. :( She's on Endone/Oxycodone for the pain but it's not really touching it (we're in Australia, don't know if you even get that in the UK).

Is she lying down? It really helps to keep lying down, stops the gas pain being quite so grim. Hope she feels better tomorrow.

Thumbwitch · 09/05/2012 13:53

Yes, she's hopefully sleeping by now (FX!) and I hope she's better tomorrow too. She's been lying down since she got home at lunchtime - too sore to do anything else. :( Luckily her mum is with her.

I had a laparoscopy yesterday and they prescribed me with ibropofen and paracetamol but its not doing much would it be ok to take zapain instead of paracetamol?

orangeflutie · 01/08/2013 22:28

I would ring the doctors and get something stronger. I had endometrial ablation 3 years ago and found ibuprofen and paracetamol useless. Codydramol was the only thing that worked, plus peppermint tea.

Hope you can get something sorted.
