My lovely friend has been told she needs to have one as she has recurrent ulcers and a white patch on her tongue.

Anyone any experience of what to expect, she hasn't been told much at all other than it will be very painful and she will have stitches. Sad

TIA

I had one done just this morning tongue & cheek (for ? Lichen Planus). Procedure itself want too bad, just a bit stingy when the local anaesthetic went in. But I'd agree with the person that said take pain killers before the anaesthetic wears off. Eating has been pretty painful all day, hoping tomorrow night be a bit more comfortable. I went back to work straight after as work at the same hospital and was fine apart from being sore! Interesting to hear ppl talking about connection with filings as the white patch I have is right next to a large amalgam filling.

I've just been told I too need a biopsy of my tongue. On the underside of it. I'm scared silly, the consultant told me he'd take the patch which is about 1cm long x 0.5cm wide...... It seems to be about 3 mm deep. He also said he'd take a margin around it too. I'm so scared that it's cancer. I'm worried sick.

I had a red inflamed area in the middle of my tongue and the oral surgeon did a biopsy. I was under when they did the procedure so felt nothing. When I woke up I had not pain as well. The real pain came in about 3 hours. The muscle below my tongue was very painful. I could hardly move my tongue and it was difficult to swallow. I ended up going to the hospital in the middle of the night. They have me morphine and a steroid to reduce the inflammation. The top of my tongue where the biopsy took place had very little pain. They took out 1cm right in the middle of my tongue. I was wondering why the bottom of my tongue was hurting when the procedure took place on top of my tongue. In my opinion they retracted my tongue too much while I was under and they really strained my tongue muscles. The next few days were a nightmare. The stitches and inflammation were rubbing the roof of my mouth where my gag reflex is. For about a week I gagged until the stitches came out. It took 3 weeks before the gagging feeling almost stopped. I don't mean to scare any of you but I want to point out that complications can happen but are probably rare. My biopsy turned out not to be cancer which is what I really thought I had without a doubt. Good luck to you all and don't smoke.

I had a biopsy a few weeks ago. The procedure was painless after the anaesthetic was in. A small piece was taken from midway down the right side as a precautionary measure to rule out oral cancer. I won't know for a few more weeks but they didn't seem too concerned. It did swell up a lot and got very bruised. I wasn't able to eat solid foods for the first week and lived off soup, ice cream and mashed potatoes! The pain wasn't too bad and I found that I could keep it under control with paracetamol. At night I found it easiest to lie on my left side to avoid having my tongue lying against my teeth. After a few days most of the stitches fell out but I still have one left which Is taking its time and I may have to go get it removed as it's a bit of a nuisance. I was able to keep up all my engagements that I had planned for that week although I didn't do much talking or eating!
