Advice about poorly ds2 please?

He's been ill since Saturday night. Started off with vomiting and a high temperature (touched 40 a few times), he's been completely listless for 3 days, mostly sleeping, hasn't wanted to eat and when he has, hasn't been able to keep it down. Yesterday, he perked up a teeny bit, ate a tiny amount of food...and then got raging diarrhoea. 11 other kids at his pre-school are off sick, presumably with the same thing.

Anyway, this morning, to add insult to injury - he's got a dreadful cough. He's been sick (with the coughing as opposed to 'proper' being sick) about half a dozen times since he woke up an hour ago - once on me, cheers.

So - do I take him to the doctors? He hasn't had a raised temperature since Monday - temperature is normal now. I really don't want to drag him to the doctors for them to say "it's viral." If he doesn't have a temperature then it is viral and there's nothing they can do, is there?

Has anyone else's child had this nasty D&V bug and then a horrible cough?

Had enough

oh Moo, sorry to hear dear little boy is sicky

Ummmm.......I would go the diarloyte /flat coke route and lots of TLC for him and vodka for you. Do you think he would take some warm soya milk? I know he's a big boy but he may give him some nutrients and soothe his throat and won't exacerbate the mucus.

I think you're right about the docs, plus he may catch some other strain of cough from the waiting room.

(not really, you know I don't do hugs)

harriea · 15/02/2006 08:17

My little boy has had exactly the same. We got rid of the diarheaa finally by taking him off milkentirly and only giving him baby rice and apple/banana to eat. Took a week.......but the cough remains although a humidifier in his room has helped

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 08:49

Thanks guys - and thanks for that obviously-not-a-hug-but-looked-suspiciously-like-one, suzy

He's not so bad now he's been 'upright' a bit longer - not coughing as much. I'll leave the doctors (agree, suze, last place you want to be when you're poorly). I think the cough will get worse again towards bedtime - they usually do, don't they?

No diarrhoea so far today - I am keeping him off the milk, harriea - odd boy won't have milk on cereal anyway so that's what he's had for breakfast: dry cereal

He now wants "chocolate or something for zurt [dessert]" - so I think he's feeling a bit better (good job he doesn't know about my stash of Creme Eggs - I've told him we haven't any chocolate).

I really hope he's over the worst of it. DS1 and I spent Friday night in hospital with him hooked up to a drip because of this "virus" thing...
he's fine now - no more sickness but still very tired.
Good luck

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 11:19

Thanks Tommy, I appreciate that. Your poor ds - this is a nasty bug, I think this is the most poorly either of my two has been (for which I know I should be grateful). Ds2 is much brighter now - though we are having to stay within dashig distance of the toilet (I won't elaborate further...)

Hope your ds feels better soon, too.

dashing. Very tired

Oh, poor ds2, and poor you. I hope it gets better soon- if he's still coughing tomorrow I would go to the docs, personally, to get his chest checked, but it sounds as though it may be the last stages of the bug, doesn't it?

Marina · 15/02/2006 11:29

It has stalked nursery for ten days now. We got off lightly with just the nasty cough bit, dd dodging the D & V. Sympathies SL, hope he feels better soon.

doormat · 15/02/2006 11:32

Sl hope he gets bettter soon, like tamum advises I would take him to docs if his cough gets any worse
and like another poster said I would give plenty of flat coke to boost his sugar levels.

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 11:33

Thanks, tamum . I've pressed my ear to his chest and back and he doesn't sound rattly/wheezy - but I will take him to the GP if it continues. We're supposed to be going down to Wales on Saturday - he gets horribly car sick though and I think the poor kid's been through enough (may try and persuade dh to defer going down for a couple more days).

Oh, roll on Summer!

ds3 has been so poorly recently, I was thinking he must be very seriously ill and have hovered many a time with my finger poised over the phone ready to call the gp.

His illness has lasted 2 weeks - listless, lethargic, black rings round his eyes, no appetite, not drinking much, sleeping 12-13 hours a night then within an hour of getting up, lying on the floor seemingly exhausted. Didn't want to play and once he got on the trampoline but got straight back off and whinged for the rest of the morning - headache? achy limbs? One episode of diarrhoea, no vomiting though thank god.

In the last 2 days he has perked up again, his appetite has returned to normal and he actually wants to go out to play now.

Hope your ds perks up soon - it is worrying.

tamum · 15/02/2006 11:38

Have you tried him with those wrist bands SL? They're the kind of thing I simply don't believe in, but that worked for me on several occasions

SorenLorensen · 15/02/2006 11:41

Sympathy, QE2 - there are some particularly nasty things doing the rounds at the moment.

Just had a phone call from my Mum - my Dad was up all night with the same thing. He was having palpitations too and she called the doctor this morning and they've refused to come out to him as D&V does not warrant a home visit and they think the palpitations are just because of the D&V. They're probably right - and my Dad is a terrible 'panic-er' when it comes to his health (which makes the palpitations worse) but he has had a heart attack in the past, and is on Warfarin - you'd think they'd be more concerned.

Tried the wrist-bands, tamum - he was still sick (and now refuses to wear them "because they didn't work, Mummy, remember, I was still sick."

I dose him up with Travel-Eeze the night before and we have lots of stops (and a big bucket with a lid and plenty of bin liners).

We're going to Cornwall in May...

I really thought he was brighter today...he just threw up again
