I took it in early pregnancy, I noticed a difference almost immediately, certainly I'd perked up within a couple of days.

How magical?

I had several surgeries under general and a late MC at the beginning of the month and when i was discharged ny HB was 8. I've been on Ferrous Sulphide since but, although i do feel a bit better, my hair is still falling out by the handful and any exertion knocks me for 6. I need to get back to work, SSP is not enough to live on.

I almost bought some iron supplement yesterday, it was floradix but i suppose they are all the same. I didn't buy it because i was dubious that it would be any better.

How much better that Ferrous whatever it is is it? I struggle to take them, they make my stomach hurt and i nearly pooed my pants in sainsburys! :(

Sorry for the hijack Aperol

Hi, you mention hair loss and tiredness, have you googled hypothyroidism?
It is great for iron without the side effects yes, but could be worth a few blood tests first

Is spatone better than floradix?
I need a liquid iron supplement and used floradix but wondered if others were better?
Hope it works for you OP!

merci

I do have an underactive thyroid, the dose was upped by 50% to 75mcg 6 months ago. Im still really tired and my hair is so much thinner than before so I hoped the spatone would give me a boost.

75 mg is a low dose and if you were on the right dose you should expect to feel symptom free - do you know your tsh and t4? Perhaps you need another blood test to check levels?

Did you get ferritin, b12, vit d and folates checked? Is that why you need the spatone? It's really common to be low in vitamins (and some gps forget to test vit d) when hypo so make sure the gp tests all those at least once a year and check the results yourself too

Sorry - perhaps you know all that already!

How long have you been on meds for?

Oh and to answer your original question...
I got ferritin up from 12 to 60 in 6 weeks with 2 sachets of spatone daily
I didn't feel well til my severe vit d deficiency was sorted with prescription level vit d
That made a really massive difference
It also made the meds work better

Can I recommed thyroid uk and their website on healthunlocked for more thyroid info. I've learned so much there

My doctor recommended Spatone for me and offered to prescribe it instead of the ferrous tablets when I was pregnant with DS.

On two sachets a day it got my levels from 9 to 12 in three or four weeks and it completely changed my energy levels.

I take it now when I am feeling lethargic and tired and it works within a few hours. I prefer it to floradix because I found floradix a bit sweet. Spatone just makes my orange juice taste a bit metallic and i occasionally drink it from the sachet if I am feeling lazy or rushed.

If you want to read up and take a book to gp, I recommend 'understanding your thyroid' by anthony toft
He is a consultant endocrinologist and head of bta
He recommends a tsh at bottom of range eg of 0.2 and t4 at the top of the range eg 24
Bet you yours are nowhere near. Show your gp the book and ask why they are not doing that

Good morning - good to seemerci flying the flag. Nothing much to add to what she says - all good advice.

OP if you only nearly pooed yourself then you're doing a lot better than I was on ferrous sulphate. It's taken me nearly three years to raise my ferritin to a proper level (70+) because of difficulty in tolerating oral supplements, which, according to my consultant, is very common.

However, with optimal ferritin and B12, I have good hair again for the first time in many years.

Have you seen this? www.neemgenie.co.uk/all-products/transdermal-iron/prod_75.html It's incredibly messy, but effective.

FunnyLittleFrog · 07/05/2012 10:15

spatone is amazing stuff - one a day in orange juice keeps me feeling energised and well. have always suffered with low iron and this sorts it.

2 sachets a day gives me great hair but it's expensive so i usually only have one.

gingeroots · 07/05/2012 10:24

I give my elderly mum this
www.revital.co.uk/-Solgar_Gentle_Iron?source=google&gclid=CIWMqvHs7a8CFcohfAod31wt0A
Gentle Iron and itseems to work .
Think she prob needs to take higher dose ,but she tolerates this .

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/05/2012 10:36

Dont forget that tea or coffee stops iron working. You need to have it at least an hour after your last cup and an hour before your next cup.

The tannin binds to the iron so it's too big to be absorped.

gingeroots · 07/05/2012 11:00

Thanks Fluffy for reminder ,that's what I aim for ,don't always succeed Smile.
I give it with fruit juice - but don't suppose that would reduce the time between cups of tea ?

mercibucket · 07/05/2012 18:01

Oh and don't take it within 4 hours of the levothyroxine either - stops the levo working properly
