Chinese Flu, and vaccinations

It said in the paper that children over the age of 1 and under 16 should be vaccinated against this but how do we do it? Do we just go to the GPs?

I'd give your GP a ring Mieow, and ask them about it.

fairydust · 02/12/2003 13:34

does any one have any more - info

is there a vaccination for it???

FairyMum · 02/12/2003 13:39

Oh Hello! Another Fairy

I think this flu sounds so scary
If I understand it correctly only children with asthma and other conditions/weakened immune system have been advised to vaccinate against this flu. Any other information ? Are the papers trying to scare us a bit too? They haven't said whether the children who have died had other conditiones which made it more difficult to fight the flu.

Worry worry worry...........

my dd has cp- so trying to find the in's n outs with the doc - there are staff trainning till 5 but will post later if any details

miriamw · 02/12/2003 13:48

Here is the NHS direct page covering the jab and mentioning the recent deaths - still recommending it for at risk groups only.

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 14:51

Fairydust, my sone has cp too, and I am trying to get to speak to a doctor as well!

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 14:51

That should be "son".

GeorginaA · 02/12/2003 15:12

Bit scary as one of the kids who died is just down the road from us

fairydust · 02/12/2003 15:14

Lou33 - if u find any info please poat - and i will do same - our docs open at 5.00

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 15:29

fairydust · 02/12/2003 16:48

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 19:31

Grrrrr, he wants me to talk to the paed!

fairydust · 02/12/2003 20:39

Why??

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 21:02

Because he says he isn't sure if ds2 should have it or not. He tends to think no, but wants clarification from the paed.

fairydust · 02/12/2003 21:18

oh - well let us know the out come - i'd be rather intersted to here there point -

got me thinknig now if i should check with hosp first

Lou33 · 02/12/2003 21:26

Well I would be interested too. Tbh I think I will get more of a hearing from the paed than the doc. He is nice, but I always feel he doesn't quite believe me iyswim!

mieow · 02/12/2003 22:41

Oh I suppose I better find out about my 2 with Cp then

fio2 · 02/12/2003 22:53

I will have to ring up tommorrow too. My dd caught that nasty one a couple of years ago and developed pneumonia so I had better be sure

tamum · 02/12/2003 22:56

My ds had his yesterday because of his asthma, so a pretty trivial reason, but I just thought I'd mention it to say that it was a very small needle, and no side-effects (so far).

GeorginaA · 03/12/2003 08:02

tamum how old is your ds?

My 2.5 year old doesn't get asthma or anything but he does seem prone to really suffer with colds (seems to always get a secondary chest infection in the winter which has led to some scary moments) so I'm wondering whether to go to somewhere like Boots and pay for a vaccination this year. I'm asthmatic but I'm not having one because I'm pregnant (yes, I know there's no contraindictions but I'm just veering on the safe side). I am concerned though that 2.5 seems a little young.

fio2 · 03/12/2003 09:15

I have rang my gp's and they dont think it is necessary at the moment. They said tge Health Authority usually gets in toucg if they think vulnerable children should get vaccinated. But they did say if I was very concerned to make an appointment with the gp to discuss it- dont know what to do now!

Lou33 · 03/12/2003 11:34

I'm waiting for the paed to call me. If I don't hear from her I will ask her face to face on friday.

tamum · 03/12/2003 15:59

Hi GeorginaA, my ds is a hulking great 9 year old! He's had asthma ever since he was a baby really, and it sounds a bit like your ds, always getting chest infections with colds. As he got older it became clear it was asthma brought on by viruses, so his doctor was quite keen for him to have the vaccine. He has to have a booster in 4 weeks, apparently that's the norm for children under 12. I didn't know you could get it at Boots, that would be worth bearing in mind, I guess.
