Any ideas/experience as to possible causes of sudden weight loss (3/4 stone in 6 weeks, with no change in diet) and mucus in back passage? And now, in the last week or so, zero appetite (very unusual) - although that part could be stress-related.

bowel blockage. is there any bleeding? I had that too. Get to the doctors and MAKE THEM send you to hospital for scans etc. Mine was a blockage caused by endometriosis. good luck and try not to worry.

Please attend/get person you're referring to, seen by GP ASAP.

It's possible that the symptoms are due to an easily-treatable condition; but best to check.

Deffo not a condition for amateur Internet doctors. You need a proper one.

Thank you.
It's my mother. She has been seen by several doctors already and they are clearly concerned. She's had a chest X-ray ( Hmm ) and blood tests (clear) and been called for a consultant's appointment for next week (quick).
No bleeding.
I'm just wondering what the heck it could be.

That must be so worrying for you. I really hope that you and she get some answers soon. At least she is in the system, and is being treated as a priority.

I think they often do a chest xray as one of a number of checks on the heart - so may have been looking for heart issues .

And aren't there " markers" that show up in blood tests for infection and malignancies ?
So if clear ,that might be good , tho I guess blood tests not conclusive .

Shame the person ordering the tests didn't explain more ?

Good luck , emoticon .

You said no changes in diet. Any changes in lifestyle? E.g. health kick, going swimming and irritated by chlorine...

clam · 05/05/2012 10:02

No changes, no.
"health kick" -She's 79!
She's always had a reasonably healthy lifestyle - diet-wise, anyway. A chronic back condition (for the last 40-odd years) has meant zumba classes are out. But she reads health columns avidly and has always jumped on the latest idea for things to do to reduce chances of x, y and z. So there are pulses and grains and a square of chocolate a day and cod liver oil and a daily aspirin and so on. When they come to stay, there's almost a separate suitcase for it all. But no recent changes. She's been keeping a diary of food intake vs symptoms for the last month or so but nothing obvious yet.
She has long had bowel "issues" though - possibly IBS, but doctor knows this and is still wanting to investigate further.
I appreciate your suggestions.Thank you.

And I think it was a fasting blood test so yes, that surely would have shown up anything really awful?

I eventually had the xrays and stuff too but what did it was when I had a scan and it showed a large ovarian cyst. only whenthey operated did they by chance find the bowel problem which was part of the cyst/enodmetrial problem.
