Does anyone have any advice for me.... My teenage daughter is revising for upcoming GCSE's and is in awful pain with her tummy ..... Nervous stomach cramps and nauseous. We have an appointment at our GP's but not till week after next and I was wondering if any of you had successfully dealt with this.

colofac(mebeverine hydrochloride) is the prescription for irritable bowel - available over the counter. If you want to avoid 'real' medication till you've seen the dr, then colpermin (peppermint oil) and drinking peppermint tea can help. A warm bath, hottie etc.

Thanks sassy, I'm quite relieved that there is something she can take as stomach pain in children seems difficult to diagnose and subsequently treat. Does her problem come under ibs?

I had this at a similar age and the doctor advised eating more, especially more breakfast to settle my stomach.

It helped though I think a grumbling appendix which broke out into acute appendicitis 18 months later was more likely the underlying problem.

Probiotics may help. Multibionta.

I feel for your daughter, i was the same many years ago. Just seeing the desks in the hall still makes me feel a bit wibbly even now.

Ds used to suffer really badly with this ,he also has GCSEs coming up and I was quite worried that we would have a flare up. However so far so good. He has found a good morning routine getting up a bit earlier than he needs to and chilling a bit with a cup of tea, then getting ready for school without rushing a decent breakfast and a probiotic type drink has relieved some of the stress causing the stomach cramps and upset tummy. I also got him some of those Bach rescue pastilles for when he starts feeling stressed or nervous. He's only taken an odd one. I think knowing they are there is probably enough. They may not actually have any effect but he certainly finds if he's less stressed about things the stomach problems improve.

Thanks so much, we are going to follow all suggestions here. She has been retching this morning and feeling sorry for herself.... Hate feeling helpless with only a hot water bottle to offer her, so thanks again.

Can I ask you lovely people who replied... Did this problem affect you so much it kept you or your dc away from school? My dd has had a few of these flare ups now and literally is sofa bound for at least 3 days. She is not a slacker and hates missing school so I know that's not the problem.......

No, my nervous bowels were just on exam days. I was later on diagnosed with IBS which Multibionta seems to have sorted.

Your poor DD. Is she nervous by nature?

cahu · 05/05/2012 12:51

No she isn't a nervous type at all..... But she is a perfectionist with her school work and has to work hard to achieve the results she wants. She has an intolerance to some e numbers and I think it may be a combination of these things.

With me, it mostly happened as specific flare-ups (but as I say, I think the appendix had a lot to do with it) which did keep me off school for a day or so while I recovered.

But the worst bouts were in the holidays in the run-up to my A-level results, so missing school wasn't an issue.

I wasn't a perfectionist - reckoned I didn't need to be to get good results and I was right but I know perfectionist types do get themselves very wound up and I hope that she grows out of it because it is a real cross to bear.

Washingmypaws, I sometimes despair of dd2 who is a slacker of the highest order. However I don't think she will ever suffer the side effects of perfectionism!
