Butcher masquerading as dentist!

I went to the dentist on Friday to have an upper molar pulled. The dentist gave me 4 jabs, x rayed me and then proceeded to try and pull the tooth out. he didn't check if the anaesthetic had taken, and when I squeeled with pain he told me 'it's only pressure you are feeling...not pain'. I know the bloody difference; I have had 3 kids and I know the difference between pressure and pain! I told him through tears that it was hurting and he jabbed me again and carried on without even waiting for it to take effect. the result was I felt every one of the 40 minutes it took to rip the tooth out of my jaw. I am now left with a badly bruised face (around the bottom jaw from his hands, not the upper jaw from the tooth) and I have discovered he has left some tooth still in there. I am too traumatised to go back, gum and face is still swollen and I am pretty p**d off with the whole thing.
I was actually crying and shouting at one point and he ignored me completely.

that is nasty! i would complain to whoever you complain to with regards to doctors

i've had a molar out and it didn't hurt at all... took about 2 minutes

ShaysMummy · 13/02/2006 22:46

i had exactly the same experience as a child!! exactly!
he didnt wait for it to work and i could feel and, even worse, hear the thing being ripped out!
now i have to pay an absolute fortune for private as i need a general to have anything done.
he gave me a life long phobia!

I had my upper wisdom teeth out, under local anaesthetic. Dentist checked first and one side hadnt worked so he did more (although he was rather surprised).

Then he pulled them out - just in just a few minutes, despite the ends of the roots being curled over.

Complain - there must be an official body you can complain to.

i had to have a toenail removed once, had to have injection into toe ow ow ow! then really had to convince him, by screaming that local HAD NOT worked! so you have my sympathies. ignoring you screaming is in negligent.

marmaladesun, local anasthetic will not work if the tissue is infected, he should have realised this and discussed the possibility of it and the best course of treatment before he started.
I know you are reluctant to go back, but see a nice dentist get some antibiotics and go back when your healed a bit. Or ask for a referal to the dental hospital for removal under anasthetic.

You poor poor thing!

Hi Chapsmum. I never knew this about infection and antibiotics. He has put me on penicillin anyway.
I have never ever been frightened of the dentist (I'm a hypnotherapist and treat dental phobics all the time!!!), but the thought of it now fills me with panic.
He didn't even give me a spare gauze plug for my gum...I had to go to the chemist and buy some as the one he put in was dripping blood down my throat and chin!
