sorry meant each sachet is 5mg of iron , which is meant to be equivalent to 65 mg of furrurs sulphate ...iron pills ...

What is the prescribed iron full of then ? (other things)When I was pregnant I took spa tone off my own bat but the doctor was scornful saying there was hardly any iron in. I am taking liquid iron but it is terrible for staining my teeth !

I think prescribed iron is full of other stuff and is given in high doses because it isn't easily absorbed, whereas spatone is easily absorbed so you don't need as much (that's the spatone blurb anyway). my gp had never heard of it, but i have a friend who has a daughter who's paediatrician said it would be ok to take spatone for anaemia, but it would take much longer to get iron levels up because it is lower in iron. So if you want to feel better quickly, the tablets are better. but if you don't mind waiting and/or it's just low ferritin and not anaemia as well, then spatone or another supplement would probably be ok.

Thank you for explaining that. It does make sense.

Please ask to see your thyroid test result
If your tsh is anything over 2, please post back and someone on here will advise. Also see if t4 was measured. And if a test for thyroid antibodies was done
Your symptoms sound 'hypothyroid' to me - have a look online and see if the symptoms match

Also check what your b12 levels were - you want 'high in range' not just 'in range' so maybe above 500

I got my ferritin from 12 to 60 in six weeks with spatone

RockinD what do you think? Worth another check of thyroid test results?

wow thats a good response to the spatone , I'm taking 2 sachets a day at the mo and stuffing myself with any veg thats green...lol

They checked my thyroid , FBC , diabetes , and all came back "within normal range " ....

they cancelled my apptas my doc has to be off now that day .... and had no other one to offer me ..which i was disappointed at ...so now got to wait and re book ...when she's in again and when i can get time off work ...
crazy system now at the doctors .....

Unfortunately 'within normal range' means not much at all in the uk - really - do phone and ask what the tsh and t4 were. Sadly thyroid issues are often v badly treated and you need to be proactive in your care

Afternoon merci

On the subject of Spatone, it's probably nicer to take than most iron supplements, but it was not effective at all for me.

Not really anything to add, but given that low ferritin often goes hand in hand with low B12 and/or folate and low Vitamin D and also with hypothyroidism, I'd be after those plus, as you say, TSH, FT4 and FT3 and antibodies if the lab will do them, which may mean the doc writing specifically on the form rather than just ticking the TFT box.

OK?

D
