Retching in the morning

For quite a while now, I've been getting "the dry heaves" shortly after I get up in the mornings. It's really horrible, but it's just "mechanical" IYSWIM - there's no nausea with it, I don't feel sick! I have to clamp my hand over my mouth/nose and think very hard about something else to stave off actual vomiting. Not nice when trying to deal with getting DC ready at the same time ...

It's been getting more frequent recently - almost every day now - and yesterday I was actually sick for the first time with it. It's as if my body's got something that it has to get rid of - but what?? And why do I not feel queasy along with it??

Definitely not pg, and this has been coming on gradually for maybe 4 or 5 months now. I've never been bulimic or anything, have always had a pretty cast-iron stomach - can go years and years without any vomiting - so this is really not nice!

Anyone have any ideas?

Very strange I'd see a Dr. Might be excess acid.

mrsbaglady · 02/05/2012 09:59

Thanks Julia, I know I probably should. You know what I fear it is, though (sorry to drip feed!). I have a little moka pot of coffee every morning - the strong dark Italian stuff. I'm worried that it's connected with that, although it sometimes happens before I've had anything at all to eat or drink in the mornings, and sometimes after. I would be devastated to have to give this up though ... I go to bed at night looking forward to my little black cup of heaven in the morning! Making coffee that way means it doesn't actually have all that much caffeine in it, but I'm worried it's the pot or something - poisoned by aluminium ... Sad. Paranoid much?!

I would suspect it is much more likely to be something like acid reflux TBH.

mrsbaglady · 02/05/2012 10:03

Would that not cause pain though, Minnie?

Not always. some info here Any risk factors - skipping meals, smoking, late night meals etc? Regular use of aspirin/ibuprofen?

Julialyne · 02/05/2012 13:46

Maybe try not having the coffee & see if that helps. That way you can eliminate that. I would see the Dr. You might just need some medicine to help the acid so easily fixed. Let us know how you get on.

My mum had this, combined with early waking. It was anxiety related and disappeared with anti-anxiety medication.

wow baglady I have the same as you. But intermittently, 2 days in a row, then nothing for months. Its v similar to how I was with morning sickness, nearly a decade ago. Sometimes cleaning my teeth brings it on. Sometimes smell from half full dishwasher. I thought it was down to low blood sugar, as only get it in the morning. Though most mornings I am up v early and go to gym before even a cup of tea.

I don't drink coffee. will monitor and see if there is a link to pain killers.

mrsbaglady · 02/05/2012 14:14

I know, I need to try going without coffee for a month or so, just to eliminate it, Julia. But the thought freaks me out - I just love it soooo much! Psychological dependence or what. Need to bite the bullet ...

Thanks for the linnk, moaning - although I don't have any of the other risk factors there is something in there about a persistent cough, which I'm also prone to and was told it was some type of mild asthma-related thingie. I don't have it at the moment though.
