Post op Hip replacement advice

My SF (75) had a hip replacement last Weds. He has been very fit active until just before Christmas when the pain in his hip became quite acute. Hence the hip replacement.
On the day after his surgery, the physio encouraged (in his words 'Bullied') him to walk, with the aid of a frame. He was experiencing extreme pain. The result was that something went pop and there was an alarming amount of blood. I'm not sure what happened then but they patched him up again.
He was discharged on Monday.
My question really on behalf of my mother is, Should he still be in extreme pain and unable to walk?
He isn't a drama queen, but he's using a bucket instead of walking to the toilet.
Any advice would be appreciated, they're off to see the nurse to have the wound dressed tomorrow but my mum's not sure he'll be able to walk the distance from the car to the surgery.

Doesn't sound right. I've known several elderly people have hip replacements, including mum and MIL, and they've been OK. Some pain but not major, once discharged. Was he given pain killers and if so, is he taking them or is he being 'brave' about them?

Under normal circumstances I would say you should really encourage him to do his exercises, but I really am not sure.

Thanks for the reply. He is taking his pain relief, not sure what though. The dilemma is about the excercise, he says he can do most of them but can't move his hip side ways. But he's just told me that he's getting knife type pain in his calf and that pain is worse than his hip. He's having heprin injections daily ( administered by my mum) and wearing support socks.

If I were you I would ring the ward, tonight, for advice.

I'll get my mum to phone now thanks, wish I'd thought of that.
