Weird mouth problems

A couple of days ago my lips felt very sensitive and itchy - just inside the mouth. Yesterday, my mouth felt slightly rough and I though I was going to get some ulcers. Whenever I ate, my tongue felt as though it was swelling and filling my mouth - looked normal in the mirror. Also, there was what felt like a lump in the middle of my tongue - again could see nothing. Same today although my mouth feels more rough - if I run my tongue round the front go my mouth it feels like tiny spots. I ate breakfast and could feel this lump in my tongue again. I can't seem to move my tongue properly. My mouth still feels overly sensitive and a bit itchy.

I have hay fever although very mildly this year and can't eat certain foods when I have it - apples, kiwis, pears, peaches and a fe withers all make my mouth itch and slightly blistery, but this has a different feel to it.

It's all a bit odd.

No suggestions thenSmile Today i have developed ulcers everywhere - all along bottom of gum, roof of my mouth.... Yuk. I am a frequent ulcer sufferer, but not usually this many. I think perhaps the past few days have just been building up to these ulcers. My tongue still feels huge in my mouth!

Eurgh - sounds like its worth a trip to the GP. It could be a one off, but massive ulcer outbreaks can be a sign of auto immune diseases.

Hmm 2 things spring to mind, oral allergy syndrome sounds likely with all the issues you mention re certain fruits, google and see if it fits in with your symptoms?

Re the mouth ulcers, I used to suffer horrendously from them, over 10 at a time sometimes, doc and dentist were baffled and I was just prescribed difflam so I could numb my mouth to eat was horrendous time. By chance I spoke with a locum doctor who said he had a patient previously who found it was sodium laurelth sulphate (SLS) in toothpaste causing the ulcers, as I was desperate to improve things I found a SLS free toothpaste and have never looked back, I get the odd ulcer but never ever more than one at a time and very occasionally. I now totally avoid any products with SLS as once I stopped using body washes etc containing it I also saw a huge improvement in my eczema.
The 2 SLS free toothpastes I have found are boots "expert" whitening toothpaste and sensodyne gel (just the gel sensodyne all their others have SLS in)

Thank you for those ideas. No wondering if I have a virus as feeling generally crap now - achey, slight temp. Don't know what to eat as so many ulcers!

Baked tatties with butter are good if your mouth is too sore for anything else. I went through months where I couldn't eat much Sad. It really wasnt much fun. agree with trying SLS free toothpaste. Antihistamine might reduce swelling of your tongue in the short term. My dentist referred me to my consultant, who after 3 years (of consultations and biopsies) sent me for food allergy skin tests which ALL came up positive Shock...

Oral lichen planus can cause a very weird sore feeling in the mouth including white lines and ridges. Might be just as well to see a dentist and get them to have a good look.

bounty007 · 04/05/2012 13:15

Oh yes, I forgot to mention lichen planus.....got that too (biopsy to diagnose)

pigsinmud · 08/05/2012 15:49

Thanks for help. I feel much better. Ulcers on the way out, but am left with a really dry mouth. Still feels sandpapery when I run my tongue round my mouth - looks normal, apart from healing ulcers. Slight burning sensation.

Go and see dentist - could be lichen planus...dry mouth and sandpapery is a good description as is being sensitive to peppermint, chilli and even tomatoes.

discobeads · 08/05/2012 20:55

hand foot and mouth? Do you have any blisters, pins and needle feeling on your hands or feet? DH had this not so long ago, and had your exact symptoms, coupled with blistered, peely hands.

Is a dentist a better bet than the GP?

dentist on average more use than GP, NHS charge for consultation should be no more than £17.50. GP's tend to be very ignorant about mouths (not all of them, I'm sure, but lots that I have come across). In the same way I wouldn't see a dentist about anything below the chin.

pigsinmud · 08/05/2012 21:25

I don't have an nhs dentist unfortunately!

Hi just wondered if you had any advice on oral lichen planus. I have it on my front gums and the more I read about it the more anxious I get, thanks in advance
