Dd (3) has a cough that's driving us nuts ...

She's asthmatic but that seems to be under control with steroid inhaler. She started with a cold a couple of weeks ago but since then is coughing and coughing. She's had a few nights with a high fever but that seems to have settled down for the last couple of nights and hasn't eaten ANYTHING (even bribes of ice cream) since last Thursday, just drinking a bit of milk, quite a lot of water and apple juice. She's exhausted. Today she woke at 8am, slept from 1-5pm and was back in bed at 8pm this evening. And has coughed ever since, despite being asleep at the same time.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar ...

dd was like this week before last then last Thursday the spots arrived - chicken pox. Could it be that do you think?

kleist · 12/02/2006 22:45

You know, I wondered about that. But given that she's got this awful cough following on from a cold ... isn't it more likely to be a respiratory thing?

any further advice here? She's looking so pale and exhausted ...

Kliest, I would try giving her some medised. My ds had this cough, it is only just starting to clear now, and the only thing that helped him sleep was Medised. He would wake up so much happier if he had been dosed the night before, because he had actually got some sleep!

My DS has had similar, think it was the flu thing but he's also been coughing a lot and has actually been sick every night last week because of his coughing. I've been giving him benallin for children now about 30 minuts before he goes to bed, and although this doesn't stop the coughing altogether it does ease it somewhat and he now hasn't been sick overnight since Friday (keeping fingers crossed that I haven't jinxed it now). Some things you can do to ease, especially if your DD is asthmatic are to steam her room, or sit with her in the bathroom, with the door shut and the hot taps running. Or alternatively boil the kettle in her room for a few minutes with all the doors/windows closed. There are also some essential oils you can use, a few drops of lavendar and eucholiptus (excuse spelling) oil on an oil burner will help open passages and will help sleep. I have an electric oil burner so no need for little candles etc and therefore no risk. Worth trying to get hold of one of those - if you're interested I can lay my hands on one for you - my Mil is an aroma therapist.

This is just how dd was 5 days before the spots appeared. We and the doctor thought it was a chest infection as she was coughing mostly when laying down at night and actually made herself vomit with it. Amoxcillin was prescribed but 5 days later the spots appeared.

foxinsocks · 13/02/2006 19:36

kleist, she probably has this bug that is going around. Dd (also asthmatic) has had this bug and her coughing was endless for weeks - in fact, I took her to the GP to check the dosage of her inhalers and indeed, he did give us a stronger steroid one to use for the next few months.

If it continues, it might be worth taking her to the GP/asthma nurse to see if the dose of her inhalers need to be increased while she is poorly.

Piffle · 13/02/2006 19:39

My dd is the same and a non asthmatic, thre is a dreadful virus going round, high temp, listlessness horrendous cough and sometimes witha viral rash.
We just fo tixylix, calpol etc and cuddles, pop her in my bed too when she is realy bad.
Steam inhalations can work too

SwimmingUpHillThroughCustard · 13/02/2006 19:40

has she not benn to gp?
my dd was like that for 2 weeks(cold and cough) after it got worse in thirs week i took to doc to discover chest infection and even now, second round of antibiotics needed to shift it!

kleist · 13/02/2006 22:35

helsi, I'll keep an eye out for spots then. To be honest it would be a relief as this endless coughing would see an end.

I haven't taken her to the doctor just yet because she's had a chest infection once before and was quite different to how she is with this.

I've had a go with medised in the past but it seems to totally knock her out especially before her nap.

Kliest, the medised is only any good at night, no good in the day at all.

kleist · 14/02/2006 19:19

I did give her some medised in the night last night when she woke with another raging fever and it did settle her down better than calpol or neurofen. Took her to the GP who says she's got influenza B plus a bronchial infection. She's so poorly and exhausted ...
