How much back pain is normal on your period?

To cut a long story short, I've either been on birth control, pregnant or breastfeeding since the age of 14. I've only had a few months of "normal" period, so I don't know what to expect.

I came off the contraceptive injection in September, my periods have been all over the place, as have my hormones (a little bit crazy). With each period the lower back pain on the first 3 days of bleeding has grown.

Anyway, I've been back and forth to doctors with constipation and the beginnings of a front and rear prolapse. I have the constipation under control and I'm doing excersises to control the sagging of my insides, but the back pain still goes on.

It's painful enough for me to stay home, take ponstan and wear front and back hot water bottles. I can still walk around, even though it's sore and I can manage the stairs sideways. It's bending down that's really painful and it gets worse as the day goes on.

I was thinking this was normal period pain until this month and I decided to do a quick search to see if there was any way to control it. I got loads of hits for other scary things, like endometreosis and ovarian cysts. Bloody idiot I am googling any medical thing.

So I thought I'd ask lovely mumsnetters.

Oh yes the first periods after birth/bf are a bloody nightmare. Take as many drugs as you can - they do get better.

I stopped BF in August last year and my dc is 2.8yo, would it still be sore now?

That's not normal. Most people don't have to stay off work each month! I'd go to the GP and at least get it investigated.

I've not been off work, but I'm self employed so I've been hot water bottle wearing at home and at the warehouse (which is like an extension of home anyway).

Still sounds far more painful than most people experience. Go to the docs.

Thanks

I've got heavy periods and my back pain's always been bad but I have had a couple of bad back problems which have resulted in lots of medical intervetion. I'm currently recovering from a bad spasm and my back is worse than normal this month. I've noticed as well that since I had SPD in pregnancy that my muscle ache is very hormonal. I also have fibromyalgia so that won't help me.

Sorry Groov, that sounds awful.
