In my household we have had so many bugs over the last couple of months.

I have difficulty knowing when to keep ds (3) off nursery. SOmetimes I have kept him off when he looks like he is on deaths door and then a couple of hours later he is running around!

So what is too ill??
a temperature? a cold? tiredness? I have no idea!

How do you lot judge?

Vomitting/diarrhoea/any temperature above normal. Also if they need any special looking-after.

If mine had had a bad night I would mention this to the staff (ditto in Reception) so that they would be aware that the child might behave differently to normal - ie more likely to misbehave, or to need putting down for an unscheduled nap. IME the staff want to help the children co-operate and enjoy their day, so knowing that they may need to intervene more or help the child a bit more than usual assists them.

I would never keep a child off with a cold unless they were so poorly that they needed constant attention. Similarly I would never ask the nursery to keep them indoors because of their cold.

I never send my children to school with a temperature altho my best friend and I fall out over this as she says it's just a sign that the body is 'handling' a bug if there are no other symptoms of ill health going on as well.

But I feel that a temerature could develop into something else later in the day.. or get dangerously high.. and this means the child should be at home.

Officially anything over 38 degrees Centigrade, but I would keep off a child with a temperature lower than that if they were exhibiting signs of illness (eg not wanting to eat).

Agree LM. Im my kids, 37+ is a temp as I know what their usual 'well' temperature is.. and that's always somewhere between 36 and 37 degrees

Funny, I'm just debating this one too, DS2 has an ear infection and is on antibiotics at the moment I was going to ask more or less the same thing. Will probably send him after reading this thread as he seems perky enough, although is coughing a bit.

I keep DD off nursery if I don't think she is able to keep up with the normal day to day activities they do there. I don't think it is fair on the staff or other children to send her in when she would need much more attention than normal or not feel up to joining in.
