I went to gp this week as was suffering from chest pain had ECG and bloods and I have costochondritis but during the examination the gp mentioned she could hear a soft systolic murmur but not to worry its probably benign. I have to go back in 2 weeks to see if they can still hear it and if so getting sent for an echocardiogram. I wondered if anyone else had experience of this and what the impact on your lifestyle was. TIA

I had a murmur discovered when I was 16 and it was investigated by a cardiologist and found to be benign. It's never had any impact on my life at all.

I had one when I was asthmatic.

But it went when my asthma went.

Both my dd2 have one, and it doesn't affect them at all, don't worry. Smile

My dsis found she had a slight one when she was doing medical training and they were learning to use the ECG machine. Never effected her.

It is possible to develop a 'false murmur when you are unwell which is probably why they want to check again in a couple of weeks.

My DD was born with a loud murmur and had 2 holes and a narrowed valve but they all rectified themselves by the time she was 6 months old.

Try not to worry about it - even if it is diagnosed plenty of people live normal lives with them and you just have to be careful with things like general anaesthetic etc but better to know about it if you do have one

I have a heart murmur caused by a floppy Mitral valve that has so far caused me no problems at all, i am now well into my forties and have had six children.

Also my ds has an innocent murmur that his Paed always hears but not our doctor!

Try not to worry, it may be nothing and even if it has a cause it may give you no trouble.

I've had one since birth and it's made no difference to my life whatsoever.

Thanks everyone that's really reassuring to hear am trying not to worry and just carry on, seem to have a lot of viral related things recently so maybe related to that. I have a bit of health anxiety so anything like this throws me, have been feeling better last few days though and back at work which helps a lot :)

I have a hole in my heart and associated murmur. (Pan systolic ventricular septal defect - sounds impressive). I have a completely normal life, cycle, swim, ski, have given birth to two heathly children.
The only difference is that I require antibiotics for dental work and any operations, but then so do lots of people.

I've always had one.
I spent 16 years in the military, run marathons, and only have three children
