can i get a peridontist under nhs?

hi, have seen a private peridontist, that costs me an arm and a leg!! have only been told i have severe generalised aggressive peridontitis...i am shocked as i was always told my teeth were great!!!! but now i am worried about it and how i can cover the costs as financially we have a big mortgage and 3 kids,...so cant afford so expensive treatment...i had a 400 pounds 1 h consultation...just to give u an idea...thanks for your advice!

You would think so wouldn't you. In reality PCTs commission very very little specialist dental care. I would personally speak to my dentist and ask if there was one & if not, ask if you can appeal to the PCT for funding for treatment. They are unlikely to say yes (budgets are tight & other problems have priority over teeth I'm afraid) but I have heard of peo

Grrr, people getting treatment this way. May be worth a letter to your MP asking why this treatment "necessary to secure your oral health" is unavailable.

In 7 years of practise, I have never had a patient accepted by a dental hospital for this treatment but again, it could be worth asking your dentist about this.

We do understand how expensive it can be, I just paid £250 for something to help me stop grinding & now have £6 til payday so we're not all hideously profiteering & greedy, just normal folk who will try to help where possible.

I might have been very lucky, but I was referred to our local dental hospital for a course of 6 deep cleaning sessions, that have dragged my gum disease back from the brink of disaster (same issue as you OP - a great set of teeth; dismal gums). I was told it would have cost in the region of £1500 privately Shock
