DD3 had a temperature Fri morning of 38, and then the usual it went away and by late afternoon it was up again and then went down in the evening. Tonight it has gone up to 38.5 at teatime, down to 38.1 at bedtime and is now 38.8. Ive given her calpol. At what stage do you wake a child to try and get the temperature down and what is the best way to do it. Im guessing at the moment I should just leave her but I want to be sure. She has a deep cough and is a bit snuffily.

ring the doc because us mums have different opinions and experiences with medicines, just to be on the safe side

38.8 is high and I would try and get it down a bit but over 39 is considered very high. ( am an A&E sister so have got a bit of knowledge not just shouting others down) Hope she's feeling better soon.

Ok I have been to the emergency docs tonight, and spoken to NHS direct yesterday re: my son's temperature which has been between 102 and 104 for two days.

Advice I have had is:

  • continue with Nurofen and Calpol, stagger them so you're doing them four times a day.
  • Loads of fluids
  • strip off (my ds has been in pants for two days) and lie on top of bed, trun off radiators
  • Don't sponge down, or put in cool baths as this can send the child into shock (I think this happened with ds last night)
  • Normal for child to be slightly delerious with very high temps but the real worry is a febrile convulsion so try and get temp down.
  • call a doctor if you are worried
  • obviously be aware of meningitis symptoms - can they get chin onto chest without neck hurting, are hands and feet cold, joints and limbs hurting, not being able to look at bright lights, rash that doesn't fade if a glass is pressed against it.

HTH

Thanks for the great advice puddle - my son's had the exact same thing for the past two days - up to 39.9 at one point but I keep giving him Nurofen and it's working really well - haven't tried any of the other stuff yet but I think I'll go take his blanket off based on what you said - there definitely must be something going around.
