Routine Health Screening for Men

We have smear tests and mammograms from a certain age, do men have an equivalent? DH is talking about going to the Dr and asking for a general health check but I can't see them doing blood tests etc without him having any symptoms.

I think more and more routine screening is being done for men - but not until they are much older. My husband (now 64) was screened in his 50s for prostate cancer; both of us have been having tests every two years for bowel cancer - I think this year will be the third lot we have had, and this year (ie in his 65th year) he was called for an ultra sound scan for, I think it was called an Aortic Aneurism. The last test is relatively new and will have been rolled out over the country by March of next year.

I hope this helps - not sure if there is anything else that men are tested for.

Wow NUFC some one else about my age on here. Like you DH & I are tested every 2 years for bowel cancer. DH had a full health screen last year BP, cholesterel levels, diabetes, weight and prostate. I think some tests depend on your P.C.T.

Smile 2old2beamum - I find Mumsnet really interesting; my daughter recommended I had a look when she became pregnant a couple of years ago.

You're right about some tests, of course; but I asked specifically about the ultra screen scan when I went with my husband to the hospital for it. When we were coming out we ran into one of our friends - evidently they trawl through an area for men in their 65th year and then have a day doing that area. Unfortunately the technician did tell me that take up in some areas is not good. So silly, because the test only took a few minutes, was non-invasive and my husband has been given the all-clear; there will be no need for him to go again. Men are four times more likely to have an aortic aneurism.

My DH is 47 and he got a call from the Practice Nurse a few weeks ago - he never goes to GP - to ask him to go for BP test. He was then asked to go for a fasting blood test yesterday which was for diabetes and something else - not actually sure I know what the other thing they are testing for is, but apparently this is routine screening.
