How do you get on with the copper coil? Can you "feel" the coil wires?

I'm thinking of having the copper coil, I don't take hormonal contraception currently as it has an awful effect on me. I'm 37, happy with my family as it is!
Just wondering if you or your OH could feel the wires or anything from having the coil fitted? How long does it take to become effective?
I have very light periods, wonder what effect this would have?

I had the copper coil for 4 years & DH or i could never feel it. I could reach for the threads to make sure it was still there but that was it.

Also have light periods & was shocked by how heavy they became. I went from the diddy tampons to going through the ultra fat, biggest you can get in an hour. I leaked constantly in the beginning & would often wear a tampon & a pad. I felt like i was 15 again Smile It settled down after 8-9 months.

I have the meridia coil (one with hormones) and I haven't had pms nor periods for 2 years!!! Previously I couldnt take pill as it made me go mad but this is amazing. I'll have it out in a year to try for another but after that I'm having one till menapose!! I can't speak highly enough about it. And no cant feel anything

I've had the copper coil for about a year. Neither I nor DH can feel the strings. I have had fairly heavy periods with some increase in pre-menstrual symptoms but nothing too awful.

I also found the insertion process painless although had bad cramps for the day after it was put in. All in all though I'm very happy with it.

Thanks all! I react badly to contraceptives so I'd have the coil without the drugs! Do you have to have it fitted during your period? Or tested for suitability then?

I bled heavily on the copper coil and also had a lot of lumbar pain which ended up as a chronic bad back (or so I thought at the time). Since having it removed the 'bad back' has gone.

I have the copper coil, had no problems period wise. Yes, the threads can be felt, but only by fingers Blush.

Mine or his, not any random stranger or anything.Blush

Hated it, went from very light periods to being afraid to leave the house when on as they were so heavy. Had it removed and Mirena coil fitted. Back to very light pain free periods in the first month....wish I hadn't gone through a year of awful heavy long periods

I had one from 1998 - 2000, then had DC2. Had coil again from 2001 - 2011 with no problems at all. Yes I cd feel the threads when I wanted to check but DH never noticed. Slightly heavier periods at first but nothing major.

go back and get the wires shortened a bit more. Dh has only felt my strings once (had mirena coil for 3 months) but mine are very short as I found out when I went for my 6 week check up and they couldnt see them! They can be felt with fingertips but cannot be seen.
