Anyone know the cost of a private hysterectomy??

My dh pays for me to be covered by BUPA under his company scheme. I am due to see the Gynae on weds. I have a feeling (long long back story I wont bore you with) that he may recommend a hysterectomy.

I have 2 questions really...

  1. How much would it be
  2. Would it be covered under the policy?

TIA

I had huge fibroids and went down a similar route. First was Mirena coil, which didn't suit, then had a Myomectomy. Offered a spinal but in the end, they couldn't get it in properly so had full GA. Horrible time, lots of blood loss, long recovery. Left me with adhesions, which then meant I had bowel issues.

5 years later, all the fibroids grew back and then some, so offered the same op again or hysterectomy. Went for the hysterectomy, no spinal offered (but possibly this was because of the failed attempt before?). Recovery was a whole different experience. No significant blood loss, off the morphine the morning after - the previous time I was drugged up for days, and I am a total wimp about pain. Out of bed the next day, discharged after 3. The recovery time was 6 weeks, but this was recovering from the procedure itself, not the GA.

15 months down the line, I am a different person. Previously, I was tired, depressed and in pain all month, every month. Horribly anaemic and my sickness levels at work were sky high. Now I have energy, am pain free and not tied to the bathroom constantly!

If you want any more info, feel free to PM me.

Hi Bec

Saw this which seems to say that a spinal can be used.

when do you have to decide?

Becaroooo · 26/04/2012 17:43

Well, it would seem to be a moot point now.

Dh has informed me that, despite BUPA telling me I am covered, the company secretary at his work says I am not.

So.

Thats that.

No way we can afford to self pay.

Oh no!

How do BUPA know you are covered? Are you on their system? If so then you must be covered! Is it a small company your DH works for so Co Sec is trying to somehow save money?

Becaroooo · 26/04/2012 19:07

I rang BUPA and gave them my details and they said I was covered.

I think the company are trying to save money ben Its a small company and the company secretary told my dh that they only reason they offer BUPA cover is to get tests/investigations done quicker and therefore get people back to work sooner Hmm

I guess I should be thankful I have had 3 appts this week and 3 next week!!

Am having the coil fitted. Will see what happens...you never know!

If it doesnt work I will ask to be referred to the nhs for hysterectomy.

That's awful. In that case, I would be tempted to get your husband to take you off cover when the policy renews as he is paying tax on the company private medical insurance, and what's the point if they won't pay for anything?

Ben10NeverAgain · 27/04/2012 12:23

Sounds very strange to me Bec if BUPA know that you have cover. If you call them to ask for an authorisation code would they give you one? I work for a very big company and we have Axa PPP. It's nothing to do with my company whether Axa give me authorisation or not - Axa make the decision. Sounds like they might have some sort of "second-class" policy?

Hope the coil works for you and helps you feel a bit more comfortable (((hugs)))

Ben10NeverAgain · 27/04/2012 12:26

here is the small business bupa page. It seems to me that core cover includes inpatient treatment. Can't see that they can opt out?!

Becaroooo · 27/04/2012 12:51

Thanks both.

There is def something dodgy about it. I was in tears last night and dh is caught between a rock and a hard place...I am telling him BUPA say I am covered and the C Sec is telling him I am not Sad

Lets keep fingers crossed for the coil!

Do either of you know whether I could switch to a private policy with BUPA?

You could but the cost would be very high due to the pre-existing condition,. When I was at risk of redundancy I called Axa and they quoted me £135 pm.

I know when I worked at AXA PPP, we used to offer "no worse terms" policies for people coming off of corporate plans, so their pre-existing conditions were covered. They were expensive though, and I left there a few years ago, so I hate to think how much they are now.

With regard to the company secretary - it is right that they can decline treatment. Corporate policies are set up so that the premiums are calculated on the previous year's claims for that company (whereas individual policies are calculated on what everyone claimed the previous year IYSWIM). Big companies tend not to bother too much as a few claiming doesn't make that much of a difference - say 10 people claiming out of a workforce of 250 - but smaller companies can get a massive hike in cost if 1 person out of 10 claims in a year. It's not right in my opinion, and I have a very poor regard for private medical insurance after everything I saw when I was working there.

Ben10NeverAgain · 27/04/2012 17:20

Ah that makes sense then Swimming. My company has around 60,000 staff in the UK so I guess my £25k worth of claims via Axa PPP in a year is piddling to them. Thanks for the info.

Crapola for you though Bec

Becaroooo · 28/04/2012 07:46

Yeah. Dh's company is about 250 staff (ish)

So.

Coil for me! Smile
