MMR jab, 102.2 fever only 24 hours later

...should I be worried? DS is 16m, after jab he had a decent nap, was normal and played as usual. That night he slept 7.15- 5.00am, which is unusual as he normally wakes once or twice a night.

Today he had a low temperature this morning but ate normally, then became mopey and started being clumsy and fallng over, and wanted lots of BF. But on waking from nap, he was boiling hot and crying, then clenching and struggling as if in pain, then his temperature suddenly climbed to 102.2. I stripped him, put in tepid bath with me, did heaps of BF and gave Calpol. He seems better but is still eating and I'm a bit freaked as I brought the fever reaction was 7-10 days after, not the next day? Anyone else had this with their toddler? Should I stay in room with him tonight? Any advice?

It's 4.30pm here, I'm six hours behind the UK.

Thanks, if anyone is still up and can help!

It might just be a coincidence but yes I would stay in with him if the temp continues (also temps tend to go up at night anyway)

Thanks...should say,

Still NOT eating, not still eating

And

I THOUGHT not brought the fever reaction

Sorry about typos....

As it's not nighttime I'd get him checked over

It would have to be A and E as doctor not open on Saturday...I am not sure if it's just a standard reaction to a vaccine? It just that everything I'm reading says the measles rash and temp is over a week later, not immediately.

He had hib vaccine as well? Maybe it's that?

Okay, he ate supper but when being put to bed with usual BF, became wet with sweat. Dried him off and put in pyjamas, he's now asleep but I'm worried. I'll keep checking him but don't know whether the drenching sweat is the fever breaking or something to be worried about? He was given Calpol at 2.30pm and ibuprofen at 6pm. He also had Calpol at 9am.

How is he now?

Halister11 · 04/05/2012 11:27

My son has had the exact same reaction. He got the 15 month MMR booster on Wednesday and by Thursday night he was boiling. Temp range is the same as (101-102). I called my ped and he said thats its 'unusual' for kids to get a temp within 24hrs as it usually takes 5-12 days with live vaccines. Told me to keep giving calpol and bring him in if the fever doesn't go away after 3 days. Just wondering how long your sons fever lasted? How is he doing now? My sons appetite hasn't been as affected but he still has a fever (still day 1 here). Would really appreciate your advice

He had the fever for two days, and was pretty unwell for a week, culminating in a stinking cold which he still has. He had a minor measles reaction ten days later, ( after jab) with a small rash, temp again, but he was reallly not himself for a week and I think he got the cold five days after jab, as a separate incident, when his immune system was already taking a battering. I have never seen him respond so badly to a jab before and for a while I was quite worried as he as so miserable, crying, clinging, terrible sleep with him up every night between 1amand 4am for several days.

I then got a chest infection as was so worn out by it all.

Hope your little one feels better soon.

His paediatrician said it was an unusual but not abnormal vaccine reaction.

Hope he feels better soon.
I guess I'd be thinking "Well if that's how he reacts to a very weak tame version of the measles virus then thank goodness he didn't have to suffer with a wild strong version of it."

Thanks for all your comments. I guess its also possible that my son may have a viral which caused the temperature, but we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully he wont have any other symptoms. He just got over a cold which lasted almost two weeks. He's exclusively BF and has been acting strange refusing the feed, biting and crying. I really hope its over soon!!
