Give Calpol too. Have you got any cool and soothe sheets? Might help. If not, cold flannel on her forehead. Any fans in the house might help. Does she feel hot herself?

greyriver · 09/02/2006 23:17

yes her back and neck feels hot as well, shes 12 mo by the way..going to nip up and take her temp again in a mo

Strip her off to her nappy and sponge gently with warm water.

While she is stripped off check her for any rashes.

Is she uncomfortable at all?

How old is she?

Auntymandy · 09/02/2006 23:19

nurofen should bring it down!

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 09/02/2006 23:19

Tepid sponging (though she'll probably hate it, so watch she doesn't scream herself hotter!), fan, strip to nappy, use calpol (or other children's paracetamol) and nurofen (stagger the doses and write down what you've given when - it gets confusing!).

DS1 gets ridiculously high temps when he teethes. Everyone says that teething doesn't cause a temp. But every time he's cut a tooth he's had a temp of 40-41.3. So it can be that. But don't let that lull you into a false sense of security - keep an eye out for anything else that worries you.

Have taken DS1 to the doctor each time he's had a temp except the last one (was in labour with DS2 and knew it was his teeth!) just to check it wasn't ear or throat or chest infection - same response from GP each time - he's a well boy with a temperature and some children just get ridiculously hot when they're not well.

Hope she's better soon. Make sure she drinks lots of water.

Put her in a vest and put a cool flannel over her and a cold drink.

dont panic either

horrible isnt it? when they are ill

Auntymandy · 09/02/2006 23:19

If you are really worried go to a and e

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 09/02/2006 23:20

DS1 got beside himself with rage when I put a cool and soothe strip thing on his forehead, so don't feel bad you don't have them!

greyriver · 09/02/2006 23:24

shedoesnt seem uncomfortable, when i picked her up to give nurofen she smiled (aftar inital grumpyness of being wokenup)
no rash (i stripped her)
concave fontanelle
doesnt seem in pain or unwell

i keep going up and she is taking quite a bit of water, her nappys have been wet in during the day so she is passing water too.....

she has had a terrible chest this week thou, took her to doc monday he said nothing to be concerned about

GR - on that basis I'd just carry on as you are. Sponge her down a little - lay a wet flannel across her forehead and see what her temp is like in 30mins time or so.

greyriver · 09/02/2006 23:29

thanks for your tips everyone will see how she goes through the night......

dh just took temp, king calpol and nurofen are bringing it down, come down to 39.....phew....

My daughter used to get these sudden burning temperatures when she was very young. All the GP could tell me to do was give plenty of calpol, water, tepid sponging and sit her with a fan blowing on her to cool her down. All I can say though is that trust your instincts and if you think something isn't right and you can't get any joy from your GP or NHS direct then go to A&E. Its better to be safe than sorry. Take care, Louise.

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 09/02/2006 23:30

Temp often highest about midnight - circadian rhythm thing, I think.

cherrypop · 09/02/2006 23:33

I think if her temperature dosen't come down in an hour maybe it will be best to take her to a&e, a temperature higher than 40 should be checked even if the GP said she was fine when you took her. To be honest GP's tend to give advice by limited observation and they tend to assume we are just over reacting by taking an unwell child to see them.

Good Luck

motherfunkerhunkermunker · 10/02/2006 09:23

How is she this morning, Greyriver? What kind of night did you have?

SHHHH · 10/02/2006 11:01

any news? This is how dd was last week, turns out she had this bug thats going about...

greyriver · 12/02/2006 21:34

hi , thanks every1 for your help, sorry i have not been online had a busy weekend. DD kept her temp all friday (around the 39 mark) with staggered calpol and nurofen bringing it down slightly. saturday was pretty much the same although she seemed to have even less of an appetite, but today i have only had to give her 1 dose of calpol when she woke up it was 37.8 (she's norm 36.4 ish) and from then on (fingers crossed) her temp has been ok...she still has this awful cough though. thankfully though she seems to have regained her appetite, so hopefully whatever nasty bug she had is starting to go.
thanks for everyones advice, her temp at 40.1 really scared me
