Nose bleeds

My 7 year old son has always had a lot of nose bleeds, it starts and seems pretty heavy but usually stops after a few minutes.

Is this normal? Id say he had one every 3 months or so... otherwise fine and healthy.

Are you definitely sure he isn't a secret nosepicker and not letting on? I ask because my dd1 is always having nosebleeds (two today) and she has made the inside of her nose so fragile that it doesn't take much to get going

However she only gets them when she is reading and ... um... picking her nose

Conversely, my brother used to wake up in the middle of the night to find his nose bleeding (at a similar age to your ds) - it was linked to his hayfever in the end.

My five year old has them too, probably about the same frequency as your DS. I've never worried too much about it because they stop within a few minutes. I think some children are more prone to them. I mean, I have never ever had one myself, but I remember at school there were certain other pupils who were known nosebleeders and had them quite often. The blood loss sometimes looks a lot (My DS had one in the bath last week which turned the water really pink) but really it probably isn't more than a few ml. I think if they went up to once a week in frequency or something like that I would take him to the doctor, but I'm not worrying now. Yes I think it is normal.

my son started with nosebleeds at the age of 2. Gp said he would probably grow out of it but at the age of 10 he was having them loads and there was always a lot of blood. The summer months were worst, sometimes 4 a day!
he had his nose cauterized a few weeks ago and so far so good but the real test will be when the summer comes.

There was a boy at a school I worked at who had regular nosebleeds and lost loads of blood (we would go through virtually a whole loo roll trying to stem the bleeding) - I don't know for sure but suspect he was anaemic, don't know if that had a bearing on it though.
