What food when getting over sick bug?

Ds was sick Monday evening/night, followed by diarrhoea on Tuesday, early Wed. Didn't eat anything. Had 1 rich tea biscuit all day yesterday. Woke up slightly brighter today and had 1 piece of toast. Flagged somewhat after lunch, then asked for a small yogurt. Runny poo about an hour later. Still drinking lots. He's just 3.

What should I be feeding him? He's never had a sick bug before, and its so long since dd has I've quite forgotten what to do

BUMP..I need to know as well although dd is slightly younger at 8 months.....

Anyone..?

I just stick to toast etc for first meal or two. If stays down then progress on to normal diet.

suggestions and recipies are welcome !!!! Let me know if you get it.

I have tried dd also on rice pudding and plain custard to tempt her but it's the cough that then makes her sick that then puts her off.

harriea · 10/02/2006 09:18

My GP has told me only baby rice, banana and apple until diarheaa has stopped (plus only 1/4 strength formula). Son is 7.5 months and was on 3 solid meals a day

Posey · 10/02/2006 13:37

Thank you.
Am trying to tempt him with whatever he fancies but think he's a bit frightened of being sick again if he eats anything.

DP had this bug recently -the only things he could eat and not "expel" (sorry if TMI) when he was feeling a bit better were dry toast, banana, apple, plain boiled rice. Bit boring but it worked

Spidermama · 10/02/2006 13:57

I always give scrambled egg and toast (white if you have it).

kreamkrackers · 10/02/2006 14:04

i always find bananas are a great food for when they've been sick and had diarrhoea. the main thing is to give him lots of fluids which he's having so try not to worry too much about the food yet, he'll eat when he's ready to.

Enid · 10/02/2006 14:04

I always give them anything they fancy tbh.

Annabel Karmel says BRAT standing for Banana, Rice, Apple and Toast.

when DS is ill i generally let him have whatever he wants. For bad tummies though dry toast is always good, if he won't eat it dry then try putting a bit of honey on it - honey is also a help for chesty coughs although is not the cure all but is definite help.

Ginger biscuits are good for helping to settle tummies. My doctor once said that if they're not eating anything, then if you add a couple tablespoons of lemonade to water, then they at least get some sugar intake and their metabolism does still keep going and therefore expells the bug quicker

mszebra · 10/02/2006 21:34

I always start with a fluid like milk or maybe apple juice. They get that by itself. It's a lot nicer to throw up liquid if they do throw up. I imagine toast hurts when you throw it up so I wouldn't go for that. If the liquid-with-calories-in-it stays down and they are still begging for food an hour later I feed them a little of anything (doesn't matter what). If that's still down an hour later & they are climbing the walls with energy & hunger I assume they're fine and can eat as usual after that.

This is all assuming you've properly starved out the tummy bug with lots of little sips of water to start with, of course. Should only take 16 hours at most, if done properly.
