Good Lord, what's wrong with her? (And please dont say "she's a baby"!)

Okay, so DD is 18 weeks old. The past two days, she's had screaming fits, and they're real high pitched screams. It sounds as if she has her fingers stuck in a door or something.
She's not hungry. She's not tired. No rashes, no blotches, dies down after a few minutes of being held. Any ideas?

trapped wind? that can be really painful and disappear after a few minutes.

Elf1981 · 09/02/2006 20:15

Don't think so, usually when she has trapped wind she either burps or farts and it goes away, not in this case.

Dies down after a few minutes of being held? Then it's probably nothing serious.

I suspect she's just worked out how to get held when you had plans to do something else.

Hiya Elf, big sympathies it's hard when they are screaming for no apparant reason. When DS was little he had terrible colic and I still shudder thinking of the hours of inconsolible rocking/driving/singing. The senior health visitor came to see him in the end and she did a study of babys first year and gave me a copy. Weeks 18 to 19.5 on her chart (studied of 50 babies) shows a big storm cloud over it, I used to refer to this and was amazed how accurate it was. So not much advice to help I'm afraid but have some comfort that weeks 20 - 23 have a big sunshine over the chart.

Ahhhh! My dd did this and we never really got to the bottom of it. It's around the colic time isn't it. Does she do it in the late afternoon/early evening particularly? It's sometimes called sunset blues.

I have no suggestions really but I feel for you. It's very upsetting isn't it?

CatBert · 09/02/2006 20:23

Agree with Easy.

I have seen this several times, and with both my own. It's like they made this noise once, and it got SUCH immediate attention, brain re-routes every request via SCREAM AT LOUDEST PITCH.

Elf1981 · 09/02/2006 20:55

LOL.
It's a bloody awful noise though, really sounds like she's in a load of pain!
Yesterday it was around five. She was grizzly, I thought she wanted feeding but we just had all the screams instead.
She did it today around three ish, she'd been asleep and had a feed, we had her on the play mat, she was a bit grizzley so we picked her up and all of a sudden she started!
Then again this evening, just gone seven. She'd had a bath, we were getting her ready, and she started crying, a little whimper, which got louder and then the screams.
She's never been like this before, is colic something that can appear around this time? I was under the stupid assumption that it was 0-3 months that was the worst for colic!

my dd had colic. used to dread the time from 4-7 every evening. constantly walking up and down the living room rocking her, going out for walks in the pram. it was hell!!! was in tears myself 1 day because i just didnt know what to do anymore.
i know how upsetting it can be..

chapsmum · 09/02/2006 21:57

I do remeber the chap doing that at about that age and me being conviced that something was seriously wrong with him. On reflection I think this was the transitional time form going to only crying when hungry wet etc, to crying because they are exporing their voice, you, crying for attention etc...
Could be the same thing
Could be something completely different, confusing little buggers arent they???

Elf1981 · 09/02/2006 21:59

they should come with labels
I sometimes feel I know how to take better care of my clothes than my baby, at least my clothes say what they want, they dont just scream and expect me to know they need a 40degree wash!!
