Headlice help please!

Dd(6) was crawling with headlice tonight - noticed her itching and there they wereShock She hasn't had them before so can I just check I'm doing the right thing?

I shampooed and then drenched her hair in conditioner and then used a Nitty Gritty comb to comb out onto kitchen towel all the live lice and eggs etc and a fair bit of dead skin too I think! In all I was combing for nearly 1hr 30 mins! She was a star and put up with it stoically but is dreading having to be combed again...

What do I do next?? Do I send her into school tomorrow? Do I use Hedrin? When? How often should I be combing? I have looked at past threads and befuddled myself so I'd really appreciate your help please!

Oh dh and I have conditioner combed our hair too and found nothing... Phew, but will keep checking!

My dd had this last week. I did buy hedrin, but also treated the same as you.

Yes send her to school tomorrow, but keep her hair tied back & just keep an eye on her. I probably didn't need to spend the £11...

Shameless bump for the daytime crowd!

I wouldn't bother with Hedrin (it didn't work for us) Just comb again in a couple of days to ensure there are no more.

If you're really thorough though, you can do it in one go. I managed to get rid of DS's recent infestation with one combing

If you use Hedrin, try Hedrin Once. It penetrates the eggs (dissolves the egg cases) so more effective.

I used it on dds, when they had nits, and then combed and re-treated a week later, and again a week later, and never found anything alive after the original treatment Smile

Good luck!

Also, yes, school fine (but hair tied back, always). If you use Hedrin Once you shouldn't need to comb too often, but I would still do a follow up or two...I tend to do what they say on the bottle, then add another one in between for peace of mind.

But I am the paranoid type, who has to Hedrin own head once dds have them, as prone to psychosomatic itching Wink

maybeyoushoulddrive · 20/04/2012 13:16

Thanks for the advice - yes I'm psychosomatically itching like mad! I've checked mine - last night and today and there's nothing to see, but just the thought makes me squirm!

I've been to the chemist and got Hedrin and also some tea tree oil which they recommended putting in the shampoo and conditioner to deter the little buggers creatures. A friend recommended Vosene detangler and nit deterer (is that a word???) but the chemist didn't have any...

This is a painful subject for me! Both my kids have had it repeatedly and the the tea tree doesn't work as a deterrant (that's the word maybe hee hee).

Hedrin once is the only product that kills the eggs to so no need for re-doing a week later BUT it is SO OILY and the stuff doesnt wash out as it doesnt lather. After doing my daughter's long thick hair, even shampooing 5 times her hair is still oily the next day and I have to apply shampoo into her hair DRY. But it is effective. All the other products just kill the lice and you have to use a metal nit comb (these are better at getting the eggs out) afterwards.

Another effective way is spending lots of time with your hands in their hair, the eggs stick to the hair and do not simply wash out with conditioner but you can pull them out with your fingernails and any lice you find (these are very fast so grab them quickly.

At the end of the day your child will prob get them repeatedly because some mothers will not be as keen as you to check for the buggers!

Good luck.
