Making sense of thyroid results

LouisPasteur · 19/04/2012 14:27

I've been feeling generally crap, weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair, mental fuzz.

GP sent for thyroid test, but came back as normal. Results were TSH 2.8, and T4 was 15. Can anyone make any sense of this for me?

Thanks. I feel desperate and to b told that there's nothing wrong is soul destroying. I don't want to have a health problem, but an explanation for the way I'm feeling would be a good starting point.

I stopped breastfeeding 5 years ago, but have also noticed that I'm lactacting again. My boobs are very sore. No, I'm DEFINITELY not pregnant either. Prostoglandin levels are high in my blood. They've given no explanation.

Hi Louis. Your TSH is a tad too high (should be around 1) and your FT4 should be in the top third of the reference range, which yours is not. I am hypothyroid and those sort of levels I was very symptomatic.

You don't say how old you are, but if there is inappropriate lactation going on, you should be getting your prolactin levels tested.

Chances are as well that you have other deficiencies, simply because they go with the territory. Vitamin B12 and folate, Vitamin D, and ferritin need testing and any that are low in the reference range need correcting, although unless your GP is really well clued up, you might have to do this yourself.

Those thyroid results are within a normal range. Vitamin D deficiency springs to mind also low iron. A blood test can rule them in or out.

My tsh levels have shot up to 54 six weeks ago and was told to increase dose from 150 mcg to 200 mcg of thyroxine. Still not feeling any better but have had very stressful time recently and know that this does affect levels.

DS also has hypothyroidism following irradiation treatment for hyper.

Another DS also suffered with ITP and currently has sarcoidosis.

Despite what they say, these type of auto-immune problems can run in families
