Has anyone had a virus that caused pins and needles and swelling in the hands ?

I woke in the night last Friday with terrible pins and needles in my hands . I put it down to laying awkwardly , but the next day they were a bit swollen. This has been happening every night since , and the pins and needles is still there in the daytime , but not as bad. I have spoken to two Drs about it , the first said it sounded like an allergy and take Piriton, which I did but it didnt seem to have much effect. The second Dr said it could be a virus and to take Ibruprofen. Ive been taking Nurofen every day which takes it off a bit, but its just not going away and its horrible and my hands and arms ache as well. Any thoughts very welcome !

Sounds like a trapped nerve, if its been going on for a while ask for a referral but I am not 100% who to - neurologist or rheumatologist? Anyway, I've had that for a while now (as in years) and in my case its down to nerve damage in the spine which was actually caused by a virus and never healed. Mine was diagnosed by a neurologist.

You can also get damage to the ulna nerve (forearm) - I've had that too (they call me lucky) - this can happen in sport or if you sit a desk and rest your forearms on it all day. Again, diagnosed by a neurologist.

But I'd say the swelling and pins and needles together sounds like neuropathic problems.

Definitely pursue trapped nerve idea - I had exact same symptoms and was worried it was arthritis as it runs in the family. I went to a physio. He said it was ligaments tightening due to excessive computer work. Did lots of manipulation alongside exercises which I did at home. He fixed it over two sessions. Smile

Could be Carpel tunnel syndrome? Pop and see your GP and get them to examine it.

Definitely persue a trapped nerve (my step dad is currently in hosp after having similar pins and needles caused by spinal cord compression, which in his case is caused by a spinal tumour, although disc probs can cause similar)

I am not trying to worry you just urge you not to let it ride.

Is it both hands? That could point to spinal cord, rather that 'periferal' nerves.

Other possibility - circulatory probs - particularly with swelling....
