He has had diarrhoea for about 5 days now, eating OK, no vomiting, no fever, just windy diarrhoea, have kept him off school today, is there anything we can do other than Dioralyte?

Not really Sad Is he drinking plenty and weeing plenty? If it lasts more than a week you can ask the GP to get a sample checked, but a lot of the time its a virus that just needs to settle on it's own. No blood in it or severe tummy pains?

Some people find the BRAT diet helpful but I would just give normal food, nothing very fatty or very sugary - loads of sugary drinks (like lucozade, coke) can aggravate diarrhoea.

Keep him off school until 48 hours with no diarrhoea. Hope he feels better soon.

Yes, he seems perfectly fine apart from just running to the loo now and again with thunderous explosions. he's drinking plenty of water (he doesn't like fizzy drinks)... So far he's been OK today so will send him back to school tomorrow unless there's another bout.

Hope he is feeling better soon, sometimes a bug can thrive and grow if the child is drinking milk or eating a lot of lactose type food.

These bugs can also cause temporary lactose intolerance, it might be worth trying cutting these foods out ( if you havnt already ) to see what happens.

Thanks for the tip; I will try restricting dairy further - he does generally have a (small) drink of milk at bedtime and is fond of cheese, though he hasn't had any today. He's also very fond of dried fruit, particularly those 'lunchbox bars', I have been trying to restrict those as well.

I find that getting a fizzy drink and stirring it until it's flat actually helps really well, my hubby has bowel problems and his gp told him it actually gets electolytes back into the system quicker than dyoralyte, can start re-hydrating too..something along those lines.

My eldest had something similar and she ended up going to gp for tests and had Campobylacter.. she used to eat wood, grass, paper, toilet roll etc so could have picked it up from just about anywhere. It went away by itself after 10 days I think it was, she did have a 24hr reprieve in between too which was a little bizarre. Hope he feels better soon!
