Wisdom teeth removal under sedation

Has any one had this done? I've just been referred as the thought of having it done undefeated makes me sweat and panic.

What sort of sedation did you have? Where was it done?

I had mine done in November, under general as I am a total coward! It was fine, out same day, not too bad recovery day 1, miserable day 2 and 3 ( looked like David Coultard, as out on both sides)

I was prescribed codeine but hated the spaced out feeling so took Brufen for about a week.

Done in the Nuffield hospital in Glasgow?

MrsMoosickle · 14/04/2012 21:54

No idea why that was a question mark. Should ave just been a full stop.

LittleMissMcFartyPants · 14/04/2012 21:58

Oh god general anaesthetic is what I need, wasn't sure if they would do it though.

The thought makes me feel sick and anxious.

Was it top or bottom you had out?
I had bottom out under GA at 16 but my dentist reckons its not really required Sad

I had a general but I suppose it depends on how difficult they are going to be to remove.

EnjoyResponsibly · 14/04/2012 22:03

Had all 4 out at 16 under GA. I looked AWFUL for 2 weeks. There is no way, no way on Gods earth I'd have ever been able to bear it with just sedation.

Sorry OP but I'd be asking for GA.

MrsMoosickle · 14/04/2012 22:05

It was both bottom, one was fused (nice!) to jaw bone and so GA was agreed. To be honest I reckon nothing could be as sore as the infections I repeatedly suffered prior to them comiing out, so would have gone with sedation rather than keep them!

GA was brilliant though and I felt wide awake after an hour or so.

My husband had his top ones out under local.he said it was fine, he was given a relaxant too, so was a bit out of it and has no bad memories.

About 6 weeks ago I went back to the dentist having had wisdom tooth pain for months. Dentist said "we'll have to take it out" - "OK" I said, shaking and got to get up. Dentist asks assistant to get extraction kit "What now?????!!!" "Yes, better getting it over with".

I am the most nervous patient (hence putting up with the pain for months) If she'd said I had to come back I would have been an absolute wreck.

So she took it out. It was fine. Afterwards it was fine.

I know this is a completely different situation, but I suppose what I'm trying to say is that you should try not to get too worked up about it - it could be fine, and is very unlikely to be as bad as you imagine.

I had no bleeding after mine, no swelling and no pain.

LittleMissMcFartyPants · 14/04/2012 22:13

I just need to stop thinking about it for now.
The referal process to being seen takes ages, right?

Am a nurse and it's ridiculous that I'm this worked up Hmm

I looked like the elephant woman for a good week after having mine out under GA. really really scary looking. Was confined to liquid/soft foods for a week too... I thought I would loose loads of weight... Alas no because I survived on creamy mash and milk shake Hmm

Jessicaalbastwin · 14/04/2012 22:19

I had two out, one bottom and the other top. I didn't have any sedation as I didn't really need it. My husband always has laugh cuz My heart rate was only 70 when I was having them out, for some reason it never bothered Me, I felt calm, although I didn't like the horrible sound of the equipment that they were using, but I kept My eyes shut for that.Smile I am sure you will be fine, good luck.

MrsMoosickle · 14/04/2012 22:19

Haha Geordie, same here on the weightloss [embarrassed]. It was the icecream and cheddar mash ( not together) that failed me too!

MrsMoosickle · 14/04/2012 22:20

Blushdoh!

Mmmcoffee · 14/04/2012 22:20

DH has his out under sedation and was fine within hours. I had GA and was off work for 10 days, I couldn't eat anything except mashed up stuff for four days and couldn't open my mouth for nearly a week - but all mine had 'rolled over' and had the roots tangled Confused so it wasn't a typical case!

If the dentist says sedation is all that's needed, it means you should have a nice easy run-of-the-mill extraction. That's what I'd think, at least. Wink

Hopefullyrecovering · 14/04/2012 22:22

I wouldn't have GA, which carries its own risks.

FWIW I had mine out in the chair, just with the numbing stuff. Didn't feel a thing and went straight back to work an hour later.

So unless yours are going to be particularly difficult to extract, I wouldn't bother. And don't get worked up about it! It's a totally routine procedure. It will not hurt. I promise :)

mosschops30 · 14/04/2012 22:31

I would have a GA ( used to work in anaesthetics, anaesthetics are great Grin)

I had a GA to have my coil put in (but i have PTSD)

But seriously, i would deffo request a GA for having wisdom teeth out

LittleMissMcFartyPants · 14/04/2012 22:34

Dentist just doesn't know how scaredy cat I am...I dream off my teeth falling out Shock

I managed with a dislocated arm for 12 hours but the thought of teeth extraction

OP posts:
LittleMissMcFartyPants · 14/04/2012 22:35

But will they do it because I ask mosschops

I seriously loved the anaesthetist who sent me off into oblivion for my shoulder relocation...think I told him Blush

dontcallmehon · 14/04/2012 22:43

I had two impacted wisdom teeth out under a local. I would recommend a general ;)

dontcallmehon · 14/04/2012 22:49

Seriously.

They will give you a GA if you insist.

Mine were impacted, but still, it was not nice at all and after they were amazed I'd chosen a local.

mosschops30 · 14/04/2012 22:51

littlemiss you are the patient, go armed with what you want, what you know etc etc. i can barely go to the hygenist without a GA Wink.

or you could use my usual approach, fix steely glare on Consultant and say slowly ' no it wont be with sedation, i WILL be having a GA'

Good luck

bigwombat · 14/04/2012 22:58

I had lower left impacted one out under sedation. No problems though they had to cut the tooth in half to get it out! I was completely out of it really, slept it off all afternoon. Face swelled up quite nicely, looked like a hamster for a few days but not really painful at all :)

thenightsky · 14/04/2012 23:02

I begged for sedation. Was about as much use or even less than a couple of double vodkas.

LittleMissMcFartyPants · 15/04/2012 02:55

Thanks all Smile

If all else fails mosschops I may just sob all over them. What job did you do in anaesthetics?

OP posts:
Duckypoohs · 15/04/2012 03:45

Gin that happened to me too, went for a check up and he found a hole in the wisdom tooth, I was pg at the time so went to get up, he said oh I will just whip it out now. I was Shock but as he was lovely I carried on, it was fine, the worst part was the injection into the palate , well apart from almost fainting on the way home because I took the bloody swab out, d'oh.

I have also had the opposite wisdom tooth out under sedation (before the whip it out one), it was a different experience, the drugs were good (man), I pretty much remember everything about it, but it wasn't in the least bit painful or traumatic, I remember it hurting at one point so I raised my hand, the strange thing is I wasn't feeling the pain, it was more like I was removed from it so I knew that it was hurting but wasn't feeling it, they sprayed something in and it stopped.

I'm surprised at that nightsky, I was referred to a dentist who specialises in sedation, I thought it would be basically a bit of valium, but I saw one of the vials and it was fentanyl Hmm which afaik is heavy duty. I certainly hit the deck as soon as it hit my blood stream.

Good luck littlemiss, if it's not a complicated case requiring mucho faffing with jaws then just go for the sedation.

Shangers · 15/04/2012 05:44

I had one out under local and it took two nurses and a dentist to get the damn thing out of my jaw - so I had the other three out under sedation - totally knocked me out and i didn't know a thing til woke up in recover - a little sore and swollen but only needed ibruprofen for a few days and ate soup for about 2 or 3 days - I had built it up into a massive thing beforehand and it was absolutely fine (well until I got the court summons because the insurance company had "forgotten" to pay for it!! grrrr!)
