Anyone know anything about gout???

Think DH has it!!!

Foot is very painful just under big toe.

I want him to go to doc but he says there is no point - typical man! Has gone to Croatia today - back tonight. Says he'll see how he is tomorrow.

Anyone any idea of treatment?

He is the classic mid-40s, drinks lots of red wine, brandy etc. ALthough we don't eat much red meat at home, he will always have if out. And we did Atkins quite a bit on and off.

BiL had gout a few years ago - iirc dietary control was the only treatment (and it did work)

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 11:01

have a look here
www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/gout.htm

I think he needs to get to the gp when he gets back. He may regret not going today if it is really painful.

My aunt had it years ago (she is dead now but nt through gout !). I don't think she had any of the "classic" triggers - not sure if they are real or just myth.

the red meat should be stopped immediately, as the red wine and brandy. there are medications the dr could give your dh for his gout. is he overweight? that wont be helping either if he is. and he should cut down on salt

there IS a point in going to the dr

MEN!

nailpolish · 08/02/2006 11:05

also he should maybe get checked for diabetes and kidney problems. it could be an underlying symptom of something else. medication the dr would give him would give him pretty quick relief

nailpolish · 08/02/2006 11:05

medication would just be a daily tablet

BudaBabe · 08/02/2006 11:06

Yes he's overweight. We both are - hence Atkins!

Dietary overhaul coming up I feel.

And doctor's appointment.

Gout can get extremley painful, my Dad suffers with it. Thought it was a myth about rich living though?

It always effects the joint furthest away from the heart first, ie the right big toe.

Twiglett · 08/02/2006 11:08

very painful

yes there is a point in going to the doctors .. there are drugs he can take to ward off an attack

classic triggers .. alcohol / red meat not necessarily the cause

BudaBabe · 08/02/2006 11:08

He doesn't have a heart northener!

Well maybe he does.

Yes - it is big right toe. Poor thing!

My dad has had it and it's agony apparantly. I don't think it was down to diet etc with him - he's quite fit and a moderate drinker.

It is very painful though - I think the doctor had to give him medication. It's something about the body having too much uric acid in it(whatever that may be) and not breaking it down.

I know men can be tricky creatures to get to the docs at times, but it's really the best bet for this.

BudaBabe · 08/02/2006 11:09

So if co called classic triggers not the cause what is???

Here's some stuff about gout BudaBabe - might help.

Piffle · 08/02/2006 11:15

FIl has gout
Limit red wine and beer
red meat
mushrooms are bad too.
He may need to take some allopurinals to cope with the purine excess.

jaamy · 08/02/2006 12:56

DH had gout really badly a couple of years ago when he was just 30 though started in his heal. still has recurrent bouts. Finds that ibuprofen helps as soon as he feels a twinge. Dr also told him that smoking would also exacerbate it as increases levels of uric acid. He is overweight, though not grossly and does drink too much but doesn't eat much red meat. Doesn't even like mushrooms!!!! He claims that it's a hereditary thing as (very overweight 68 yr old who has a very bad diet) fil also suffers from it.
Anyway, try the ibuprofen budababe.

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 13:12

from memory my aunt was not particularly overweight, not much of a drinker, and ate "normal traditional home cooked british food". She was a smoker.

BudaBabe · 08/02/2006 13:15

Well he doesn't smoke.

Forgot to get Nurofen yesterday - wasn't popular - thanks for reminder!

And thanks for link to info Tinygang.

I'm not very nice - I just laughed when he said he thought it was gout!!

normal traditional home cooked british food = gout

lou33 · 08/02/2006 13:34

donkey, didn't your ex have it too?

throckenholt · 08/02/2006 13:38

"normal traditional home cooked british food = gout"

maybe - but she didn't get it until she was in her 60's I think, and millions of people eat and have eaten "normal traditional home cooked british food" without getting gout. "normal traditional home cooked british food" included veg and fruit daily and not a lot of alcohol.
