Sorry.
I would just vibes him/her and see if you connect with one another. Play it by ear.

Yep I have one. Needed to shape up after ds2.

In terms of working, let's say that I quit last September as I just couldn't fit everything in timewise, and the weight started to come back on again! So I've signed back up!

I think people use trainers in different ways. In my case I am perfectly capable of avoiding the gym, or going to the gym for 30 minutes and then ending up in the restaurant/bar. Just knowing that someone else is waiting for me (and charging me!) gets me there. It is also a strange balance to being pampered and told off. I have a fairly pleasant mindless experience - she sorts out all the weights etc, checks that any machines are at the correct settings.

In terms of questions to ask, I guess I would expect them to quiz you about your personal goals, and then you cnan find out what they would advise, and whether those activities sound appealing. From my own experience I would also check that you vaguely like the person, as there is quite a lot of small talk.

When i spoke to her on the phone she sounded very scary... like i couldnt ar$e her around! she told me i had to seriously consider whether i wanted a trainer as otherwise i would be wasting her time and my money! OUCH! anyway..... don't be just take pity on me that i am SOOOOOOOO blinking desperate to shed some weight!
Even braved Sureslim last week .... but thats a whole other thread on how companies blatantly exploit the overweight and play to their sensitivities and tug on the emotional heart strings..... to get you to put your hand in your pocket and hand over £500 up front!!!!!
dont even get me started!!!! outrageous!

mrspink, I think you should be asking what qualifications she has, what experience, how long she has been giving personal training?

I have been having PT for the last 8 years. When I was working it was 2/3 times a week, now it's just once a week. I'm probably addicted to it now . Luckily for me i enjoy exercise and exercise on my own no problem but when i was working in a stressful job I liked the idea of being able to shut my brain down completely while exercising and I could do that with a PT telling me what to do. And I guess now, with 2 children, it's pretty much the same story.

Personally i would say that spidermana is spot on with her 'vibes' comment. You've got to like the person, it will also help if you admire her physique.

Good luck!

I have one! My dp is a bodybuilder and has been for the past 25 years!! The only personal training he gives me is in the bedroom! If you are single, or maybe even not , just enjoy them have a great time and let them make you feel high on excercise!but most of all enjoy!!!!!!!

mrspink27 · 07/02/2006 21:49

Thanks for your quick replies, i kind of got the idea on the phone that we could get on, just feel like i have got to the point where i could either say f* it i'll be 2 stone overweight forever and get on with it or really make a concerted effort to lose the weight once and for all, in a healthy monitored maintainable way through exercise. She has been doing it for 5 years and is a school 'friend' of a good friend of mine.

should have read the whole thread first! have a great time at the gym, it will be a great way to keep in touch.

mrspink27 · 07/02/2006 21:55

Lacrimosa, believe me if i could find a gorgeous male trainer i would... but dont think i want to share my wobbly bits with anyone who fits that description!

I had one after the last of my knee surgeries, to help focus on gaining my strength back in my legs w/o reinjuring them.

Well worth it if you have a specific goal.

mrspink27 · 07/02/2006 22:02

that is another reason why i think a personal trainer would be a good investment expat. I have knee cap injury and only seem to be making it worse when I can muster up the energy to go to the gym or swim etc....

ask for qualifications!
I used one at my gym and her poster claims she has pre/post natal experience but that actually meant she's trained people pre/post natally, not that she knows anything about what it does to your body, effects of breastfeeding etc

mckenzie · 09/02/2006 10:31

how did you get on Mrspink27?

mrspink27 · 09/02/2006 10:34

Fantastic! thanks for asking!
Went to her house last night and she looked at me knee and the xrays I have of it, was very professional and spoke a lot of sense. It was quite daunting cos i am at a real crossroads at the moment. Anyway she gave me a sports massage on my bad leg, which feels fantastic this morning and i have agreed to see her twice a week and then review in a month or so.
