does anyone have a fail proof way of stopping your children from catching the v+d bug that is going around. Other than keep them away from school, locking the doors, and painting a big red cross on it!!!. I have a real phobia of vomitting, and at the moment I feel as though I am waiting for a bomb to drop. Daft i know, but it really scares me.

It doesn't affect everyone the same. In my family it has been diarreah, not vomiting.

Ilanak, thanks for that, any little bit of positive helps me a lot. I can handle the diarreah. It is the v that i find a real problem. My little 4yr old ds had both last night. Bless him, I know that i have to be an adult, forget about me in order to reassure him that it is nothing to be scared of!!!!!! really tough though. I couldn't eat for 10 days when they all had the last bug. great way to lose weight, just not so good on the nerves!!! I know that I am a muppett!

Your not a muppet mixedemotions. There are lots of use mumsnetters who have the same phobia, me included. I have thought about not sending ds (4.5) to school for the last few days this week, as they break up for half term on friday. I did send him this morning, but the fear is very real that he will come home and say he doesn't feel well.

We ALWAYS wash our hands as soon as we get home from school, before meals, after toiletting, and this really seems to help. Other than that, I think that it's pot luck.

IlanaK · 08/02/2006 13:14

I have a slight vomit phobia. Not as bad as many on here though. I am lucky, in our family it always seems to come out the rear end rather than the mouth! My ds1 who is 4.5 has only ever vomited on one night (twice) about 1 year ago. My ds2 who is 19 months vomited a couple of weeks ago (all over my car!) and that has been it. I think some children are more prone to it than others. We had a friend whose little girl vomited with great regularity. But she never got colds. We get all the respiratory stuff.

mixedemotions123 · 08/02/2006 17:25

I am so glad that I am not alone. Thanks all of you

Mixedemotions, you really are not the only one to feel this way. I have a terrible vomit phobia and I could name another half dozen Mners the same. I have been driven crazy by all the threads about illness that have been around lately. My dd has been off school for the last 2 days with an odd bug - no appetite and very tired - but fortunately she seems better today. I saw her teacher today who said she only had 13 in class today and I couldn't help but ask why they were all away as I would not send dd back to school if she had told me there was a D&V bug going round. Fortunately, they all seem to have the same as dd, so it should be OK for her to go back tomorrow. But then I have three other children so I worry about them getting something else....

If your little boy had the D&V last night, firstly, my sympathies and secondly, every good wish that the rest of the family remain unaffected. How many children do you have altogether?

crazydazy · 08/02/2006 18:05

Hi mixedemotions, I am another sufferer of this terrible phobia. Mumsnet is great, I love the advice given but some threads really don't help us do they? Trouble is I can't help but READ THEM!!!

Its a terrible time of year for us and my sympathies go out to you, I am having counselling and have tried all sorts but still stuck with the damn thing!!! My children are 6 and 3.6 and we too (touch wood) all have strong stomachs but always seem to have coughs and colds.

I just make sure they wash their hands probably more than most and am continuously disinfecting the loo etc but there is not much you can do whilst they are at school.

I have lots of sympathy for you and all the other emetophobics on here

Lonelymum · 08/02/2006 18:05

Hi CD!

crazydazy · 08/02/2006 18:10

Hi Lonelymum how are you, will email you later to tell you a bit about the counselling.

Was just laughing as I was generally nervous when I opened this thread but then realised it was another sufferer.....its nice to know though that we are not alone with this terrible thing.

womba1 · 08/02/2006 18:15

Mixedemotions, another emetophobe here! Luckily my littlies (ds 2.10 and dd 2 weeks) are not yet at school so have less chance of catching this awful bug... but i really do sympathise with you.
It only appears to be hitting certain areas of the UK doesn't it? Are you within the affected areas?

muma3 · 08/02/2006 18:18

whole house had it around christmas . dd2 has just got it back yesterday but hasnt been sick for 24 hours now so hopefully it has just passed. we had problems getting it out the house the last time.

crazydazy · 08/02/2006 18:24

Oh I hope its not in our area......we live in Leeds

mixedemotions123 · 08/02/2006 20:08

lm I have 2 little boys 7&4. The little one seems to be over it, touch wood, my eldest seems ok at the moment. I never knew that there was a name to describe this fear. I just thought that I was a wimp. We live inbetween Winchester and Southampton, but it really is bad down here. Apparently, the local junior school had 70 children off ill, and the upper had 400 last week. HELLO, you would think they would close the school until after half term. I think they have in other areas. Thanks again everyone for making me feel part of a group instead of alone with this x

Glad its not just us then!

Ds was sick 4 times on Saturday night and had the two bob bits for couple of days, no fever though. He seemed fine in himself.
Sunday, Dh was ill, vomiting and the two bob bits for couple of days too.
Last night I was up most of the night being sick and on the loo! Couldnt go to work today and felt really achey.
I am feeling much better now, so hopefully thats the end of it.

Lonelymum · 08/02/2006 21:13

Mixedemotions, I grew up in Winchester (parents still there) and guess you are talking about Eastleigh or somewhere thereabouts? Well, you live in a lovely part of the world (IMO).

Having today finally calmed down about the bug thing (in my kids' school, the bug just consists of a temperature and tiredness etc) I then had the misfortune to hear the local BBC news on TV tonight (West Country) and it was headline news: an influenza bug followed by a D&V bug - striking people down in thee hundreds. I am back to the gibbering wreck I was before!

At times like this, I seriously question whether I should have had children .

God I feel like running for the hills!

pebblemum · 08/02/2006 21:21

Im another one with this phobia. I always thought it was just me that felt this way, glad im not alone. I too have been wondering whether to keep ds1 (8yrs) off school.

During the summer holidays we were ill twice with different bugs, they worked their way round our street but they seemed to effect me worse so I have been dreading this one reaching us. Also find it hard to watch my kids being ill-dh can look after himself but if he is in the bedroom i sleep in front room, thats how bad I am.

Not sure if it was a part of the bug going around but for the past week I have had strange pains in my stomach and the two bob bits every night also lost appetite (but that could be the fear of being sick). DS2 has had upset tummy for about 4 days and been tired alot, yesterday was worse 4nappies in 1hr but seems better today (touch wood)he also lost his appetite a bit.

I know this bug is coming in various forms ( i keep reading the threads even though it makes me worry more) but what i really want to know is when will it bugger off and leave us all in peace!

Oh pebblemum, I know how you feel. I get so worked up by it I am physically ill (diarrhoea and no appetite) too.

When I saw the news report, the presenter asked a doctor being interviewed how we could prevent getting the bug and all she talked about was what to do if you got it. I felt so disappointed, whilst at the same time knowing that these bugs are pretty much a law unto themselves and there isn't really anything anyone can do to avoid them (except avoid all human contact).

Lonelymum · 08/02/2006 21:27

I also want to ask, is the influenza B bug which is the flu part of the bug doing the rounds here, the one that my dh and son were vaccinated against earlier this year? They are asthmatics and had "the" flu jab but is this flu "the" flu?

tortoise · 08/02/2006 21:28

I to hate sickness bugs. ds1 and 2,dd1 and 2 have had cough and cold.dd1 worse than dd2.fever on and off for 4 days.Much better today. I heard it on news today 2(also west country).Hope mine dont get the v side of it next.Dreading it.Luckily we very rarely get any sickness!
