tea-tree shampoo & conditioner (ideally leave-in), comb thro daily. Maybe get an electric comb but tbh, don't really know what gets rid of them, only managing to keep ours at bay at the moment!

doormat · 07/02/2006 15:34

ask coddy-she is nit free

agree with misschief, buy some tea tree oil (more pungent) and add it to shampoo and conditioner, keep combing everyday

MistressMary · 07/02/2006 17:10

The nitty gritty comb is the best comb and I know cos we HAD the nits too.

twirlaround · 07/02/2006 17:23

don't use chemicals - check out the bug busting site to see how to clear it up without - you need to follow the program properly for it to work but it is highly effective!

last rinse in vinegar is supposed to work....

Rhian101 · 07/02/2006 17:52

My son keeps picking them up in school - very frustrating as someone is clearly reinfecting him every 6 months or so! The best solution is to put a load of conditioner on your hair and comb through it with a nit comb. The conditioner stops them holding on and helps stop tangles. It may take a while but it's the only thing that works 100%. Do it every day for a few days to make sure you're getting all the babies and eggs cos these are tiny, and make sure you comb all the way from the scalp - particularly nape of the neck and behind ears. Hope this helps - works for me!

Rhian101 · 07/02/2006 17:53

Oh and don't forget to wash bedding etc. to stop getting re-infected. Good luck, it's very annoying

I was staying for a few months with friends and their kids picked up nits from school. we tried all sorts of shampoo treatments. Nothing got rid of them completely, and soon they'd be back with a vengence. Another friend had a pet monkey (now sadly deceased). This lovely little creature got rid of them for me all in one go. It felt very relaxing while she was doing it, too. Of course, it was a great treat for her, so she was very well disposed towards me after that, and gave me lots of cuddles. This is perhaps not the most practical suggestion, though! But it's a shame it's not. Medicated shampoo treatments can't be good for the environment, and nature has an ideal way of sorting out this problem while providing a monkey with a special treat!

Wet combing is by far the best with plenty of conditioner and a nit comb. Tea tree oil work well too as does Neem oil. Apparently the little buggers don't like vinegar either. I've tried chemicals in the past and they just don't work. I think most people would agree that wet combing is the best solution. I wet comb my dd's hair now and again as a deterrent too. Good Luck.

monkey??! now that sounds like a great solution! Nothing is really working for us, 2 mths on, esp poor 7 mth old babe - not much I can use on him. I mixed up some organic sunflower oil with a tiny bit of tea tree but the back of his head still went a bit red & sore-looking and he's still got nits - hence we keep getting them again too.

Rhian101 · 10/02/2006 15:21

I want a monkey!

starshaker · 10/02/2006 15:23

DD also thinks a monkey would be ideal solution. Perhaps they should provide a couple in each school They could groom the kids during registration

4thBridge · 10/02/2006 20:29

Starshaker, have just discovered the most amazing way to get rid of lice/nits and eggs.... the Nitty Gritty NitFree comb, it really does do the job. If you've got anything living in your hair it will get it out. Good luck!
