Arse gravy - to the Imodium or not?

Hi there

Without going into graphic detail, for a few days running up to Good Friday I felt a bit crap, achey, tired... Then in the early hours on Saturday morning the world fell from my bottom, in liquid form. Utterly uncontrollable. By the end of the day it had stopped, but I still felt awful. Better yesterday, and better still today. But still with the squitty bot and cramps, especially in the morning.

Not sure if it's a virus or food poisoning.

As I would like to be able to leave the house (and, in fact, am about to) I've dosed up on Imodium. Some say 'better out than in', and that diarrhea is the body's way of getting rid of nasties, but surely after Saturday there's nothing left to 'get rid of', and my immune system is now sorting it out? Imodium's website, of course, says it's fine to take for a short while. When I've had something like this previously, my GP went very cats-bum-mouth about me taking it, and said I'd prolonged my bout of illness.

So, what does anyone else think?

Erm I am with your Gp when it's something due to virus or food poisoning.
Imodium ok when it's a real emergency (eg have to travel ) or when it's "side effect" upset tummy (when you are on antibiotics or something) but think you should let bugs work through. Can you do the banana/rice/apple/toast and clear fluid diet?

Big sympathy as had 2 weeks of this due to infection and anti bio.

from my experience if you take Imodium you won't go for a week. Sad I wouldn't take it.

whoknewthat · 09/04/2012 10:22

For goodness sake stay indoors.

I don't want to catch it and you need to let your body get rid if nastiness.

(sympathy though)

If its a virus you might be best to starve it a bit and just drink lemonade with sugar in to take the fizziness away.

Has any one else in the house got it? By now if it was infectious I am sure someone else would be ill. DD 6 has had arse gravy for 1 1/2 years now controlled by Immodium (gastroenterologists decision)

Noone else in the house has got it, thankfully, making me think it's food related. I did eat some pretty weird ham on Tuesday, and went to a harvester on Wednesday!

I'm being v careful with handwashing, and not handling food. Or kissing.

Might have been over ambitious yesterday, having a pub lunch. I thought I was better!

Ticking off duly noted. I've been feeling under pressure to 'enjoy' Easter as its the first time dp, ds and I have had any time together for ages. Didn't want to be a wet blanket.

I'm also v prone to gyppy batty, ibs-style, which I've got used to managing with Imodium, so was soldiering on, thinking it was just my gut being over sensitive.

I shall cancel my lunch with young baby tomorrow.

I still feel lightheaded and tired, partly down to dehydration, I'll be bound. Now having yet another dioralyte.

Another reason for having to resort to imodium is only having one loo in the house, and that's in the bathroom! There are times when it's just not available. However, we're going to have a downstairs loo put in soon, which should take off some of the pressure!

So, how to entertain a boistrous two-year-old, in the rain, without seeing anyone else, for days. God.

I had a 24h bug while I was in the UK; got it the day before we were due to fly back to Australia.
My Dad seemed to think Imodium was essential so went and bought me some. I refused to take it, as had caught said bug from DS so knew it was probably viral and just wanted it over and done with. Luckily, the diarrhoea did stop before we got on the plane the following evening - I had an Imodium with me just in case but I'd have had to be in a very bad way indeed to have taken it.

I would never have even considered the option if a 24h flight with a 4yo wasn't looming.

I've had similar problem on and off for months and finally went to doctor last week.... they sent me for blood tests to try and find out whats wrong cos apparently its not normal and in meantime recommended i eat those weird yogurts with live bacteria in them which has seemed to work this week!!

Tonksforthememories · 09/04/2012 21:12

If you have a temperature then it's better to let it work itself out. If not, then take immodium. That's what my dr told me when it went through our family a few weeks back! :)

herbaceous · 09/04/2012 21:46

Ooh, that's a handy rule!
