I think it is absolutely worth going back. I personally do not agree with their assessment regarding the blisters. I have seen many patients with a herpes infection of the eye (specifically cornea) who did not have blisters. I would equate it with my two Bell's Palsy attacks which are also thought to be caused by the herpes simplex virus but there are no blisters there either. Someone needs to put some fluroscein stain in your eye and look at your cornea. They also need to assess whether you have decreased sensitivity in that eye compared to the other (this is different from your level of pain, btw) In some cases, if a patient has the potential for scarring, steroids can be used, but, since this can aggravate the virus, I tend to send those cases to a corneal specialist for management.
You should be able to get artificial tears over the counter at any drugstore. Look in the section where contact lens solutions are sold.
