Do eyeballs heal?

MamaMimi · 08/04/2012 20:02

This avo'my 2 yo dd accidentally caught my eyeball with her fingernail.

It has a red scratch-like mark on it and is still sore/uncomfortable. It stings when I blink.

Will it heal like skin would?

Yes, it will heal. Dh had a cut in his eye ball a few yeas back. Was bad enough to need a and e and gluing - urge! But it did heal, and quite quickly too.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 08/04/2012 20:08

Yes, I agree, it'll heal. I stuck a knife in my eyball as a teenager (agricultural accident caused through sheer stupidity on my part) and although my optician says there's a scar it causes me no problems.

BikeRunSki · 08/04/2012 20:09

Yes. I cut my eyeball really quite deep when I was 13. Looked horrific, wore eye dressing for about a week. Was fine.

MamaMimi · 08/04/2012 20:10

Oh thank goodness fo that - thanks Hulababy. Couldn't bear this discomfort for long. Your poor dh at the time, that sounds horrible.

Watch out for it - I have two friends who got accidental injuries like this (one spiky garden plant, one baby fingernail) and both have had long-lasting problems so keep an eye on it (sorry!). If it doesn't seem to heal, get to the eye hospital. In the mean time keep hydrated. One of my friends says dehydration makes it a lot worse.

MamaMimi · 08/04/2012 20:14

Woah, just seen your responses Oldlady and bike. My injury suddenly seems very minor. Thanks for letting me know it will repair.

You might need some antibiotic eye drops as a precaution if its still sore tomorrow, but the outer surface of the eye heals beautifully.

Avoid contact lenses for a few days, as that can 'trap' any germs from grubby child's fingers on your eyeball.

Not that your child is any grubbier than the rest of them, I hasten to add.

Hope you're soon Smile and not Wink

MamaMimi · 08/04/2012 20:18

Oh maybe not so minor then margoandjerry. Right I will keep an eye on it then - it will have to be the other one tho' [bugrin]

This is me today - [buwink]

I'd go to the optician....they can look properly with a slit lamp and will advise.

Staverton · 08/04/2012 20:21

Yes you need to make sure there is not a corneal abrasion for which you would need antibiotic drops and follow up
It sounds like you need to be seen to be honest
You can got to a+e or nearest eye casualty
It's a very common thing to present to casualty with.

MamaMimi · 08/04/2012 20:22

Thanks timetosmile. You had the same idea as me re the emoticons - cheers.

I don't wear contacts so at least don't have that to worry about.

DD may not be too grubby but she is certainly VERY chocolatey today!

Ok, thanks for the advice Catsmama and Staverton. If it's still bothering me tomorrow I'll seek medical advice.

These things always happen on holidays and bank holiday weekends don't they, when gps aren't available.

You should be seen tbh. I have a corneal injury from an accident years ago and it does cause me problems from time to time. I need to use lubrication in the eye every night.

MamaMimi · 09/04/2012 19:19

Thanks for your advice hiddenhome.

My eyeball feels much better today and the red mark has gone now. I can still slightly feel something but it's not bad at all.
