Anyone ever had a septoplasty or rhinoplasty operation???

Am having this done in June as I broke my nose a few years ago and have been having trouble with breathing/snoring.

Is this really painful? Am quite worried about having an operation but the pain afterwards is what scares me the most.

I had this done a couple of years ago. Can honestly say no pain at all afterwards. My surgeon told me that noses are pretty insensitive. If you are worried tell the surgeon and the anaesthetist to give you pain relief while you are still out. They can do it but don't usually bother.

You do have beautiful black eyes but after a week that had largely gone and after a fortnight you look as if you had never had it done.

Did you have rhinoplasty then 3mum?

I'm only have septoplasty done as I bottled out of rhinoplasty as the surgeon made it sound pretty horrifying!! My nose is slightly bent to one side and the surgeon said he would do it but didn't think it was worth putting me through it all when my nose is only slightly bent.

Never had it done but I used to be a secretary for a Plastic Surgeon. You will be a bit bruised afterwards. Take Arnica a few days before surgery that will help. I think its a bit uncomfortable when you first come round - you will have packs up your nose for 24 hours and it isnt very nice when they are taken out. You will have a plaster on your nose to start with to hold everything in place and to protect it. I think it is just a bit tender but nothing awful. And then it is removed (which is fine) and TADA!! A beautiful nose! But do speak to your surgeon about your worries and he will be able to reassure you? Where are you? Is it being done on the NHS?

ok, I'll be honest and say it was the most painful thing I have ever had to endure. I should say though, that my nose was incredibly badly broken - the bone was smashed to pieces - so that may have made the operation more painful. Unfortunately, it wasn't 100% successful either (sometimes they aren't) and I still get bad sinus problems.

The most painful bit was when they had to take these massive plugs out of my nose after the op. I don't know if everyone gets these but I know I bled a hellavu lot so it maybe that this is not standard. THey gave me a small bucket of ice to eat and then yanked them out. They were incredibly long and must have gone back into my sinuses. I thought I was going to pass out!

After that, the recovery was very quick and I was back at work within 2-3 days.

uuuh - was toying with the idea of getting my huge hooter reduced but have gone right off it now, foxinsocks.

Am having it done on the NHS as it is a medical problem. So would you say poppies that septoplasty is just as painful as rhinoplasty then? Its just that I did want to have my nose straightened too but opted for the less painful operation but the one I have gone for will not make a difference to the appearance of my nose at all.

sorry! Was going to lie and say it was fine but thought it was better to be upfront about it!

crazydazy, I hope I haven't put you off. The immediate benefits were so great (the improved breathing etc.) and there's no way I could have managed without the op. Apart from the nasty plug things, the recovery was very easy and although my nose was tender, I only ever had to take the painkillers at night and I think I only took them for 2 or 3 days so it can't have been that bad.

poppiesinaline · 07/02/2006 10:27

Well, don't know because never had either done personally but rhinoplasty is more of an op than septoplasty IYSWIM. Honestly, you will be fine. Do the Arnica and take all the pain relief they offer you afterwards. The worst bit is when they take the packs out of the nose but that doesnt last for long. Tell the surgeon/nurses you are worried about this and they will be really gentle. Glad it is on the NHS. Was worried you were going to some crazy private cowboy clinic!!

crazydazy · 07/02/2006 10:32

Did you have rhinoplasty then foxinsocks? Was yours done on the NHS?

if you need the septoplasty, I would honestly consider getting it done at the same time as the rhinoplasty. At least then you're only going under once and only having to recover once. I know septoplasty sounds horrible but I just blocked out of my mind what they were actually going to physically do and concentrated on what the benefits would be afterwards.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2006 10:35

They did both - I had it done when I lived abroad in a private clinic.

crazydazy · 07/02/2006 10:37

The surgeon told me that rhinoplasty was the most painful one to have done as it involved hammering the nose and realigning it and thats what causes the bruising. He said my nose is only slightly bent and so he did not think I should have rhinoplasty but do need the septoplasty due to my breathing problems.

Did you have problems with snoring too, were they improved greatly. I am using a spray at the moment but when I get a cold this doesn't work and DP says the snoring returns.

yes I did but I could hardly breathe through my nose at all before the op. It helped the breathing almost immediately. I also got less sinus infections because the nose was better aligned (and the stuff could flow out rather than getting stuck!).

Oh I see, sorry I got it the wrong way round and thought you were having the rhino and not the septo.

nick98 · 19/05/2015 07:53

Its about 4 months after my Rhinoplasty gives Mumsnet
, and I noticed a sharp pain on the inside of the tip of my nose when I touch it. I don't know it happens with all patient or its happening only in my case.

Sorelip · 19/05/2015 07:59

My brother had both done recently on the NHS. There was a little pain after but the painkillers took care of that.
