URGENT - need reassurance about giving medised and nurofen....

Ds1 (4.8) is unwell, high temp, hacking cough, very bunged up. Gp said it was a virus.

I checked with pharmacist about giving both medised and nurofen (usually give calpol and nurofen). he said OK.

I'm worried because I usually alternate, but about 8.00pm I gave him the medised and nurofen together, dosage as per his age (10ml of medised, 7.5ml of nurofen).

Is this ok???

Should think so, but bump.

If the pharmacist said fine, it should be fine.

Yes it is. Medised contains paracetamol and antihistamine. You can give paracetamol and nurofen together.

It was just the thing about giving them at the same time, rather than with a gap between them, but the effects would be overlapping anyway?

Should be fine. They can be given together.

Yes absolutely fine to give both in tandem,it is done routinely after surgery in children and also when temp poses a serious problem,eg siezure risk

Wordsmith · 06/02/2006 22:04

You can give at the same time, or you can give one two hours after the other, if you get my drift - ie Calpol at 6pm, Nurofen at 8pm, Calpol at 10pm, Nurofen at 12pm etc.

I was told this by a paediatric nurse, btw.

This way you get to attack the fever every 2 hours instead of every 4.

Wordsmith · 06/02/2006 22:05

For calpol read Medised.

Giving a tandem dose to initially get the temp down then staggering out the doses till they are spaced as wordsmith says works best to control temp.Only thing is be careful when doing this as it can get confusing as to how many doses of each you have given, remembering i think only four doses of each in 24 hrs.

puff · 06/02/2006 22:37

Yes, good point, I usually stagger it and will try to get back to that as his temp is quite high.
