Back pain - so fed up

I've had back pain for the last 3 weeks.

It started right in the middle of my spine, at waist level and has now moved down so the the bottom of my back, hip level is really painful and more to the right.

I can't stand up straight when I get up from a sitting position - my back kind of "locks" when I'm 3/4 of the way up, then I have to stop and straighten up the rest of the way slowly.

I called the Dr after the first week of back pain as it's not the type of back pain I've had before. She diagnosed it as muscular over the phone and prescribed naproxen and co dydramol along with omeprazole to protect my stomach. After taking 3 of the naproxen I had an awful stomach ache as I get with nurofen, so am just taking the codydramol which isn't helping.

It's really getting me down. I can't lean back or to either side, and I get jolts of pain with each step as I walk.

Any advice as to anything I can do at home to soothe it, any kind of painkiller I can request which won't make my stomach eat it's self, of general sympathy would be appreciated

Good to see you again Reeny. How are things with you these days? You're due more surgery soon, aren't you?

Hi avenged,
How you doing?
I'm on and off the forum. Some days I'm not well enough and the little energy I have is spent on my baby boy or me sleeping/resting.
Been waiting since July last year for the spinal surgery......just wish would hurry up now :-(

I'm doing good. Been painting and decorating my friend's flat. Nearly done now, but will have to go with her to pick out some carpets for the flat and some vinyl for the kitchen and bathroom.

Sounds like the Drs will let you know when you've to go for surgery when they have a slot for you, that is, is you don't already have a date for the surgery. You could do with having more easy stuff to do so it takes your mind off it a bit, and then you'll be going for the surgery before you know it.

I really hope your surgery goes well and they manage to get you up and charging about like a good'un before long. You take care of yourself lady and don't do anything I wouldn't do..........you may do yourself a mischief Grin.

Anyway, I'm off to have some mad passionate sleep with DH Wink. Will be back tomorrow to see what's been going on.

How are you OP? Hope you are getting better. Am going to bed now to cath up on some zeds and will be back tomorrow to see how you are.

Hey mum how is your back today?

mumofjust1 · 12/04/2012 22:08

Hello ladies - hope you're all ok Smile

My back is still painful but not as bad as it has been. The leg pain has gone but the general, waist level spine pain is still there. It's about a 3 now compared to the 9 that it was.

I have been doing a bit of research and have, thinking back, realised that I have always had right leg pain during my period. My period started around the time that the sciatica type pain started and has now stopped - as has my period.

I was thinking that maybe I've done something to my back and assumed that as my back was bad the leg and hip pain was connected.

Maybe it wasn't.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis after a laproscopy when I was 16. I've always had heavy and painful periods and just got on with it. But, I came across something called "sciatic endometriosis" and am wondering if this is a possibility for me and could explain the hip and leg pain.

Will be booking an appointment with a lady GP and see what she says.

Thanks for thinking of me Smile

i am glad you are feeling better. And I hope you find some cause for all this, whether endo related or not. I realised thinking back, when I had the severe sciatic pain with back pain, and talking to osteopath, that I have had leg pain for a long time, but as there was never back pain with it, and it was not severe I put it down to getting older aches and pains, sitting in the wrong position for too long or being a bit of a hyppchondriac! so i ignored it. There were times when it made me go Shock but it came and went and osteopath said this was sciatic pain and is common to have without back pain with a disc problem Shock.

I hope you make a smooth recovery. Just be careful with it all. I have had 4 'episodes' in 18 months or so. Each time it has been horrible but I have recovered to normality within a few weeks, to all be forgotten about. But this time, since xmas, it has not gone away. It has eased, but it is there, all the time and even when its not painful I constantly watch how I move and what I do. Osteo said it will go badly again, said it is inevitable at some point (I wish he had not told me that! as now I am waiting for that to happen!)

If you find you recover completely, which i hope you do, this might be a good time to start some good exercise to strengthen your core muscles, once you are better, pilates or something to reduce the risk of further problems if it is not endometriosis related while you are still in control.
