Found a lump in my right breast last week, was going to the docs anyway for a pill check so mentioned it (thinking he d say oh its nothing) instead he examined me and seemed more concerned than i was. Just got an appointment for mamogramme for nxt Wed which i thought was quick [shocked],and theve sent me a leaflet on what to expect and its frightened the life out of meHmm Confused . Mamogramme then mayby needles and biopsy , it says they do it all at once could take 2-5hours depending on what they find . Anyone else had this ?Sad

Yes. I had a few lumps in my life. And had a biopsy done. All clear every time, it seems that I have lumpy breasts.
I currently have a biggish lump near my arm pit, had it checked by GP who said it could be some hair follicle not playing ball, but I don't believe it. Going back to GP tomorrow, will have it looked at again. However, I am 36 wks pg, so it can be related to this.
Anyway, depending on your age, referrals can be very quick. The biopsy was not particularly painful (the key is not to look at the needle and to get the person talking to you about bullshit to take your mind of it). Never had a mammogram but I hear they can be quite a bit painful.
Easy to say, but try not to worry. How old are you?

housewife19 · 04/04/2012 14:39

I'm 46Yrs, not had this sort of thing before, DH keeps telling me to not worry but thats easier said than done , but at least the appts quick . If your 36wks could yours be to do with milk ducts ? I know my breasts changed dramatically during my pregnancies and after with breastfeeding. I wish you luck anyway , if u see your GP mayby he will at least put your mind at rest .

I had a lump 4 years ago. I'm under the age limit for mammograms so I just had ultrasound. I had a biopsy done while I was there. The staff were really fantastic and supportive, and the biopsy was done under local anaesthetic. It was uncomfortable but not painful, though I was very tender and bruised for a few days after.
Don't be shocked by how quickly the appt came through, it's standard procedure at my PCT to see all lumps within a fortnight of presenting at the GP where possible.

referrals to breast clinics are very quick,so don't read anything into the speediness. Mammograms aren't the most dignified or comfortable things but over pretty quickly, and the biopsy doesn't hurt..but obviously the waiting and worrying is horrible. You may not get results on the day - mine took a few days and they will ask you to come back for them. If anything nasty is found be reassured that treatment is brilliant these days - why not pop over to the tamoxifen thread for a bit of hand holding and reassurance -most people on there have been through this.

here it is

Yes. Happened to me in the Autumn. As it turns out I did get diagnosed with breast cancer, but am now fine and back as normal. IF you do get that diagnosis, it can be very, very treatable now. However - something like 9 out of 10 lumps aren't cancer, so hold on to that.
Yes, it's very normal to have the appt through so quickly (I saw Dr on Sat, got a phone call from clinic on Mon asking if I could go in on Wed).
Yes, I then had a mammogram, ultrasound, and physical all there that morning, and, because of what the Dr thought, she then offered me a biopsy too, all the smae moring. Brilliant. The waiting is the worst bit, honestly - it's just great the NHS have acknowledged this and got these fast track systems in place Smile.
Do pop over to Tamoxifen thread in General Health - the ladies there are lovely and great at hand holding Smile

DialMforMummy · 04/04/2012 15:18

I was asking for your age as breast cancer is uncommon in ladies under 40, so the fact you are over 40 might explain speediness of referral.

I'm 46 & got called for a routine screening - they've lowered the age recently where I live. They found a lump I couldn't even feel & got me in very quickly for an ultrasound & biopsy. They always move fast so please don't read anything into that. Very, very few lumps turn out to be anything to worry about but they have to be sure. They give you a local anaesthetic then insert a needle using the ultrasound to guide them. Honestly the only pain is the slight sting from the injection then you feel nothing. You should get the results within days. Mine turned out to be fine - just a lump, they do nothing about it. It isn't bad at all - OK there are more fun ways to spend the day but it doesn't take long & the staff are all very caring and well trained in these centres. I know its easier said than done but really try not to worry. You can usually take a friend to hold your hand if you want. Good luck :-)

BackforGood · 04/04/2012 16:00

Yes, sorry, should have said - nothing painful in all the tests. Smile

housewife19 · 04/04/2012 16:27

Thanks everyone , good advice and kind words . I will take a look at the other thread as well Smile

I had a biopsy taken last autumn. I am breastfeeding and found a lump that wouldn't go away (thought it was a blocked duct and was trying trying to clear it quite aggressively Blush).

GP refered me to breast clinic within a week, where consultant had a feel and refered to ultrasound a week or so from then.

The ultrasound was painless but showed lump wasn't liquid like I'd assumed (thought it was milk behind a blockage), so they took a needle biopsy. Like others have said, I didn't look at the needle, though I did watch on the ultrasound screen up by my head - it was amazing to see this loooong needle going in to the breast on the screen, then see it take the biopsy, while I couldn't feel a thing Grin. Bit like watching Casualty while part of your brain knows its happening to you!

It took another week or two for the results to come back, then consultant calls you back to discuss them. For me, it was good news - just crazy lactating boobs growing a lump. They said it'll probably go away when I stop feeding, or else it might harmlessly stay.

I hope it all goes well for you. Please don't stress about the possible biopsy - just don't look at the needle!

waving to backforgood !
They might do a core biopsy, which is a teeny cu t and then a needle-like device which takes little bits of tissue-it makes an alarming zapping noise which they neglected to tell me about,so I nearly jumped off the bed-usually take several bits.

I had to have a core biopsy done on my breast lump(turned out to be infection) and although it makes a bit of a noise i can honestly say i felt no real discomfort or pain.

BackforGood · 04/04/2012 22:12

Waves to MAS Sorry I've not been over to Tamoxifen for a while - it moves so fast, I can't keep up Grin

Yes, my biopsy made a sound like a gun tacker Grin
I didn't look, just chatted inanely to the nurse who stood on my other side and held my hand. But felt nothing. Nowhere near as bad as being numbed up for a filling - wasn't sore afterwards at all (there was a little bruise but no aching or anything).
