does hair dye make your head itch?

I have had to stop going to the hair dressers, everytime I go it is getting more and more unbearable to sit for the time.

I did it myself today and wasn't quite as bad, but there was a bit when I took gloves off, realised Id missed a bit so put them back on and now I have a rash on my hand and wrist.

Already on mentelukast and a long acting antihistamine tablet.

Oh dear - sounds like you have developed a sensitivity/allergy to it. Can you talk to your hairdressers because there might be different dyes that don't have whatever ingredient in them that is sparking things off for you? They could do a skin test to see what happens. Some people find highlights or lowlights easier as the dye doesn't actually touch your scalp. Would this be an option for you? You really have my sympathies - I'm going so grey that I really don't know what I'd do if I couldn't dye it!

PLEASE stop using it! I ignored this slow build up reaction and one time my head just exploded in weeping sores. My scalp swelled, I had a headache for days. I thought I was going to lose my hair. Henna saved it (skin and therefore hair) but please don't do it again. You don't know when the product has built up enough in your system to go crazy like that. It was terrifying and so so painful. There are natural and organic solutions. Lush henna for reds and browns is good, but there is a hairdresser in covent garden that uses all natural products too. And no more expensive than anywhere else - £40 for an all over colour.

Actually, there are loads of places now I've googled it. There will be one near enough to you. For example: www.jigamihairdressing.co.uk/about.html

Yes, it does. Especially red hair dye.

Ones without ammonia are better for me.

I geta little bit of itching just when it first hits my scalp and it stops after a minute or two. Been like that for at least 7 or 8 years and it itches when it touches me skin round the hairline, again been like that for years.

LaGrenouille · 02/04/2012 11:54

I'm the same as chipstick. Have had some bad reactions and now stay with the same salon and product. I find that I have to have the dye rinsed about 3 times after shampooing and also have the very bottom of my head at the back rinsed well. I think it can be a lot worse when you have your hair dyed at the time when you have your period.

I would have thought that your hairdresser could try and find a solution for you. My salon uses Paul Mitchell but recently changed to Goldwell, and I was fine with that.

I had a similar experience to toddlerama and would never use conventional dye again, i had no idea it was so dangerous, there have been cases that have been fatal with very little pre-warning.

I also now use henna, you can get a lot of different colours i you mix it with indigo, please take the warning seriously.

I ony use it about once every two years, just the cheapo home stuff from boots or wherever. I only buy it when it's on the reduced shelf.

It doesn't make me itch at first but after a few days, it does. My skin definitely doesn't really like it.

I think I'll stop using it now.
