herniated disc - is leg tremor linked to it?

Have another thread about back pain/details etc so wont go into lots of detail again.

Have diagnosed herniated/prolapsed/slipped whatever you want to call it lumbar disc. possibly several, awaiting MRI to determine the specifics. bad is that is is increasing in severity of pain and lack of break in pain, and sciatic pain is down both legs/altered sensation at base of spine. Good is that so far no signs of nerve entrapment, in that I have good reflexes etc.

However, I first noticed a slight tremor in my legs on friday evening. thought i was probably hungry but it was there after eating, it came and went, I didn't bother looking at any kind of pattern as I thought food related.

Yesterday afternoon, i took my friend's 1yr old baby from her (fine as no bending involved!) and found that after a minute, my right leg was shaking, and friends baby became very heavy for my leg to manage. I know this is not my own personal weakness as I have a 2yo myself! I held her for about 10 mins, and when I gave her back tremor stopped I then lifted my foot onto the tiptoe (no pressure on it just raised leg) and my leg trembled. It eased again, then as I picked up my son both legs trembled, right more so, and if I took weight onto one leg, it wobbled felt like it would just not hold my weight.

It has come and gone since, gone more than come, but its there if I carry weight or lift my leg up, bent at the knee in particular.

is this related? or something else? (not suggesting you diagnose that!). Should I be concerned? i am having the MRI anyway so should I just be like wait and see what that says, or should I mention it to osteo specifically before that?

oh, sorry, and its not medication related as yesterday I had not taken anything (going to bbq wanted a glass of wine or 3). the night before I had codeine, but the wobble happened before I took it.

The short answer is it could be. Leg pain and weakness are signs of herniated lumbar discs.

The symptoms that you need to aware of are change in bowel and bladder control - that is loss of control or increased urgency, also loss of sensation (numbness) noticed when you wipe after going to the loo. These symptoms are serious and if you have them you need to contact your GP asap.

mollified yep I am numb bum spotting! I do have altered sensation in backside which osteo I aware of, and concerned about and checks every time he sees me, bu not so concerned as altered rather than anesthetised. There is pressure and odd sensation but not as osteo said numbness that means I could not feel a pin. He said if that happens, o if my foot droops and unable to lift, straight hospital.

Leg issue is slight weakness in right now, not major, but when I lift onto point of toe, as I put it down I lose control.

I feel so fucking old.

Sounds like you need that MRI, when are you getting it?

FoofFighter · 02/04/2012 19:51

Hi Pavlov, fellow hernydiscer here :) (L5S1)

I've read lots and lots and lots and lots over the last year and while numbess and muscle wastage/weakness is always mentioned I can't honestly recall reading about tremors?

PavlovtheCat · 02/04/2012 21:30

foof (love the name btw), thats what I havent found either, anything about tremor, but now it has settled into what it is, a pattern if you like, I think it is weakness, and it just seems like a tremor as the leg has no strength as I rest it down. Not sure if that makes sense.

mollfied, that, is a whole other story. short of it. had referral appt with osteo today, given wrong appt, got there at the time on my card, waited fucking ages only to be told, after being made to wait, that in fact it was earlier (like, my fault i was given the wrong, time. read my fucking card) and he was not in and I now have to wait til 17th for referral appt. Its a mobile MRI scanner comes in every month, due in on 16th, so I got to wait another 4 weeks from 17th now. Instead of the 16th April when it was meant to be.

foof did you get saddle pain/numbness with l5/s1? think that is the one osteo suspects, along with the one above it.

i hate this, it reminds me of being pregnant, and symptom spotting for something to go wrong, you know, constantly checking the baby moving, twinges here and there, worrying it means something bad (or, is that just me). I am like it now, stressing that everything i feel means something is not going well. I might even be causing the leg tremor by stressing so much Hmm.

How do you cope foof? i got another thread about that in fact, coping with long term pain, but its gone dead, think everyone got bored of my moaning. I just cant see an end. And the idea of legs losing their strength fils me with dread.

So you are waiting for a private scan? Is it a cobalt mobile scanner? If your happy to pay get your osteo to refer you to your local Spire hospital for a scan, its a little more expensive (thats about £365 for the scan) but the quality is better and they normally can see you the same week.

Is your osteo a one man band or are there others in the clinic? if there are others you don't necessarily need to see your regular osteo for the referral, all your notes will be at the clinic so any other clinician will be able to see you.

It is very rare for this to become more serious that a lot of pain so try not to dwell too much on the saddle anaesthesia etc, I know its easier said than done.

FoofFighter · 03/04/2012 14:14

coping? Now I just get on with it and ignore it as best I can. My back doesn't give me much trouble unless I walk too much or lie still too much. My leg is the main day to day problem, heavy, numb, pins and needles, nerve jangling/burning/feeling wet/painful shooting feeling, very little flexion in my ankle (foot drop).
I had a little undercarriage numbness and reported it but it was more my back passage, taking a while for the feelings to come iyswim? they weren't overly concerned about that.
Physio didn't really help as I pyshically cannot do the exercises they gave me, my foot won't go that way!

My trigger time is nighttimes, cannot get comfy in any position for more than 5 mins and I do suffer from insomnia now which just has a bad knock on effect from everything else. I was scheduled for a discectomy last month but got sent home with a temperature and a BFP!

I can't take any meds now as I am pregnant Confused but luckily the relaxin hormone is actually doing a lot of good, as is resting as much as possible, in fact I am amazed how much resting alone has made it as we are all advised to keep mobile aren't we? I had two weeks of that nasty Virus from Hell and barely moved from the sofa in that time, and afterwards my mobility was hugely improved (didn't last obv as soon as normal service was resumed!!)
