whats up YG?

Pixiefish · 05/02/2006 18:35

I've always been advised to do this by GP

noddyholder · 05/02/2006 18:35

mszebra · 05/02/2006 18:36

i have done when told to do so by dr, but i wouldn't do it unless specifically recommended to do so. can you ring either your out of hours service or nhs direct?

Flossam · 05/02/2006 19:50

No, I wouldn't. I think TBH this is an old treatment method. It's not done anymore as rule on the wards for most antibiotics. In fact, tablet wise I can't think of any. So it shouldn't be necessary. Your body will probably benefit from a consistant level of medication. Hope you feel better soon.

This might be of interest NHs direct

While it probably is ok, current medical thinking (nursing is all about best practice) says not to.

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:00

Cipro is one of the drugs where it is ok to take double doses, the reason behind this is that the two strong first doses knock the infection and then the 250 dose maintains and kills it. It is common practise for this drug, (especially for UTI and gastro infections)

Flossam · 05/02/2006 22:26

Hmm, still think thats old hat. Evidence suggests you are more likely to have a reaction to double the dose.

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:28

flossam can understwnd what your saying, but 500 is still a pretty standard dose. Its given allot in courses and as stat doses.

Flossam · 05/02/2006 22:28

True. But then why aren't they prescribed like that in hospital?

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:29

they are in the one I work in.

Flossam · 05/02/2006 22:34

Oh ok. Never have been where I have been!

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:35

crazy the way different health boards work ehh, sometimes like working in a different world of you do an agency shift outside your own hosp... Will look your theory up flossam, tis an interesting point... Cheers

Flossam · 05/02/2006 22:43

Definately. Hoping things won't be too different when I go back to my old trust.
