After posting on here yesterday I decided to have a rest from cooking so i took 2 yo to my local large supermarket and bought him chicken dippers and chips (I know) anyway when the food came out it was incredibly hot so i cut it up to cool down, when i checked the inside of the dippers were raw!! i was furious went and saw manager and complained, he gave me a refund and appologised, my question is as my 2 yo ate a couple of bits before i noticed is how do i know if he will get poorly if its todo with chicken?? should i get him checked? and I think i should follow up in writting what do you think?

I would have thought that if he ate it yesterday he would have become ill by now, if he was going to be.

I would complain in writing to HO regardless though.

It is more likely ( if anything were to happen) that campylobacter would be the problem and unfortunately that can take up to a week to show. It does usually take a reasonable amount of the bacteria to cause infection, so even if the nuggets were contaminated he'd probably be ok. I would certainly write in and also possibly talk to the environmental health team at the council who may want to do an inspection.

offer fluids, little zips and often (anything he will drink) call a dr if he shows signs of dehydration.

It might be a coincidence of course but it would be unlikely I suppose.

I would phone NHS direct and get their advice. They might want you to collect a sample for analysis for example. Don't know how these things work but if environmental health are going to get involved it could be important.

I am sure they will give you advice on how to deal with your DS but the important thing is to ensure he takes in plenty of fluids and stays hydrated. Does he have a temperature or other symptoms?

Sorry he is ill though. I would be fuming if I were you. A similar thing happened to us, also in a supermarket cafe, with some fish dippers. Thankfully I noticed because DS was little and like you I chopped them up for him. I don't think fish is such an issue anyway (people eat raw fish) but I wish now I had written to somebody about it. It clearly isn't an isolated case and I suspect it is do with poor cooking and hygiene practices.

I'm sorry to hear your LO is ill.
While you were waiting for the Dr, I did some web searching
[[http://www.hpa.org.uk/Publications/InfectiousDiseases/Factsheets/factSalmonella/ here] suggests that you should just treat it as D&V, but him being so small, I'm sure a Dr appointment will help. I wouldn't worry about the food, just keep the liquids up - or ice lollies, if he will take those.

Just remember its contagious, so be very careful with your washing - hands, clothes, towels etc.

Hope he's feeling better soon

opps, here

BigBoobiedBertha · 02/04/2012 20:43

Poor little chap. Sad

Hope he has a good night and feels better soon. At least the doctor is going to see him quickly.

HowCanADoorBeAJar · 02/04/2012 21:19

I had salmonella as a child and I can still remember how horrific it was. Just in case, please make sure you are hyper vigilant with hygiene. You should probably invest in a surgical scrub and make sure he doesn't touch your towels etc.

Poor thing, hope he feels better soon, deffently get a sample sent off for testing, it might not be samonella (there are lots of other nasties you can get from eating uncooked food or it could be a virus). Most places are really careful when cooking food (most places have probes and timers to make sure things are cooked for the correct time and to the correct temp), i would be really angry if i was served uncooked food (haven worked in many kitchens and knowing how important it is for both health reasons and the fact a kitchen could be closed down if theres a food poisoning outbreak).

Hope he feels better soon x

Poor you.My doctor recommended flat coke...( as he did not want to drink) and the rehydration sachets. My youngest was 5 when he had it and it was not nice . He ended up in hospital with a drip for a night which put on the course to recovery. If you think it is getting worse and he is losing too much weight then take him back to doc. I hope he makes a quick recovery .
