People with crazy active babies - have you ever had a bruise like this?

I posted a couple of days ago about ds2's soft squidgy area on his head. It is about the size of the palm of my hand, raised and squishy, like it has one of those computer wrist supports under it.

We took him to the doctor who looked puzzled and then said it was probably a bruise which was spreading as it went down. I want to believe her, but it seems strange that I've never heard of this before. OK, so ds1 was not the crazy active type, and ds2 certainly throws himself about a lot. Neither us or nursery remember a particularly big fall, but then he is constantly falling over and has just discovered stairs and climbing.

My question is - have you ever had a bruise like this? A simple "yes" is what I need to feel more relaxed!

um I'm sorry fisil but I'd worry about that .. I think I'd take him to A&E tbh

I know its not what you want to hear .. and I really don't know if it could be .. it just sounds a bit weird .. all my kids bruises have been bruises IYSWIM

Twiglett · 05/02/2006 09:41

I'd at least call NHS direct and get their advice

fisil · 05/02/2006 09:43

IKWYM Twiglett. But I did take him to the GP, and she was keen to see him as an emergency, and I have good experiences of her in the past. Also he is not showing any signs of being ill, and my mum was telling me about how I behaved when I was a baby and fractured my skull, and ds2 is just being completely normal. But thanks for your feedback, cos I will definitely take him for his follow up appointment (or sooner if I'm still worried).

Fisil, I'd just pop along to paed A&E - just to get him seen by someone who definitely knows what they are talking about (ie. a paed not a GP). You're v near SG, aren't you? They are so good and it won't be too busy till this evening.

fisil · 05/02/2006 09:53

would you go there rather than Kingston, dinny?

oh, DEFINITELY. They are so fantastic, they really are. Have had a lot of experience of them with ds especially and our consultant always says if I am concerned about him to come back in via A&E. plus there's the separate paed waiting area, always a bonus. and, of course, they are a teaching hospital.

let us know how you get on (if you decide to go). xx

dinny · 05/02/2006 09:56

though should admit I've never been to Kingston.

fisil · 05/02/2006 09:58

We were there with ds2 3 weeks ago and they have just opened a paed A&E and we just walked straight in, saw a doctor and walked out again - all done in about half an hour! I went to SG myself about 6 years ago and had such a horrific experience that I chose to give birth at Kingston!

But thanks for yours and twigletts posts. I think I will follow my mummy instincts - i am worried - rather than what dp or the gp say!

but then I also went to the EPU at SGs about a million times, had my mc there and a cyst removed, and they were totally fantastic every step of the way!

hope you get on OK whichever you decide to go to. x

mszebra · 05/02/2006 10:05

My DS has had bruises like that and they took 4-6 hours to go down. I'd def. be seeking medication if it was still there after 24 hours.
Glad to hear he's fine otherwise, at least.

dexter · 05/02/2006 10:06

good luck fisil, and feel strong - I would go and get this checked at A & E. Not because I think it's dreadful, just because if a mum is worried then it's worth checking! I haven't experienced a bruise like that either and my son constantly had bumps - very active boy!

Best of luck, let us know how you get on x

dinny · 05/02/2006 19:20

are you back, Fisil? how is ds - what did they say?

fisil · 07/02/2006 12:22

I've only just got back from SG A&E.

Oh, OK then, - I didn't actually go until this morning. But as I was still worrying this morning, and it hasn't changed size, we went along. We saw three doctors (you know, "I'll just ask my senior to have a look"), and had an X-ray. There is no fracture, but they were still unsure what it was as it doesn't quite all add up. So they want us back in a week to see if it has gone away!
