Any tips on unblocking dd's nose pleaseeeeee

DD has developed a really bad cold. She only has a blocked nose but it's making it difficult for her to sleep as she relies on sucking her fingers. Bless her she couldn't get to sleep after lunch and it took 20 minutes of her crying in my arms at 4pm for her to finally sleep.

She's asleep now but is fussing alot. Anyway, i am using olbas oil and a little snuffle babe on her wrists. Is there any magic tricks up someones sleeve that can help please. Also going through a tough time with a nursing strike so i am really feeling for her (and not too good myself).

Mediced is good for drying up noses.

Gillian76 · 04/02/2006 21:18

How old is she, milkmum?

Latz · 04/02/2006 21:18

how old is she - got a nasal aspirator for dd when a baby - known to us as snot sucker - helped loads - sorry bot a lot of use!

nitfreecod · 04/02/2006 21:19

go to the chemista dn get old fashione mehtol cryals - about 40p

out a small amount in hot water in a bowl int he room

JanH · 04/02/2006 21:19

nasal aspirators are fantastic though they do give a baby a bit of a shock!

dinny · 04/02/2006 21:19

Milkmum, just put your mouth over her nose and gently suck (yes, really) the snot out. I still do this for my youngest when he really can't breathe.

Latz · 04/02/2006 21:20

bot i mean not

Was going to suggest nasal aspirator.

Menthol is fab as cod has said.

Steam can also help. In the bathroom with hot taps and shower running for a while.

nitfreecod · 04/02/2006 21:21

my GOD a lot of poel have agreed wiht me tongit

Latz · 04/02/2006 21:22

Gillian76 · 04/02/2006 21:22

Are you feeling uneasy about that cod?

Latz · 04/02/2006 21:23

no - read some thread yesterday and wondered but kind of agree with her most of the time ...sofar

milkmum · 04/02/2006 21:28

Thank you all for your responses

DD is 9 months old. Sorry forgot to mention that we do TRY and use aspirator - when she lets us!!
Is it true that saline drops can actually block them up more? any experience?
Any one tried vaporisers?

Saline drops are nasty nasty stuff... it always made my baby vomit. It's just salt and water anyway!
My MW is quite old fashioned, and she advised me to rub butter or vaseline on the outside of the bridge of my babys nose... it started the snot running.
How about running a really hot shower and holding your child in the steam of it?
I now have a snot sucker and it is fab... if and when I can get my son held down and his two arms out of the way.. I have been using it a lot the past few days!!
Try the steam..I find it is good at getting it to run and then from there use the sucky thing

JanH · 04/02/2006 21:39

If there are 2 of you then you should be able to do it - one to hold her head and close one nostril, and one to squeeze aspirator, apply to other nostril and then let go

I know it's horrid for her but it does work and makes a huge diff.

You could also try Karvol or Olbas oil on her sheet, and Snufflebabe (does that still exist?) on her chest, but when there is a lot of snot which would be cleared by blowing in an older child, the aspirator is the best way to get rid.

milkmum · 04/02/2006 21:49

what about humidifiers? any suggestions

OP posts:
BudaBabe · 04/02/2006 22:15

Yes - Vaseline on bridge of nose really works.

I used to put Karvol on a long strip of toilet roll and hang from top of cot.

milkmum · 04/02/2006 22:16

how does the vaseline help Confused

OP posts:
Mercy · 04/02/2006 22:17

Lavender oil. Put a couple of drops in her bath. Also sprinkled on a muslin and tied round one of the cot bars.

Karvol is good too (but not at the same time!)

BudaBabe · 04/02/2006 22:24

No idea how the Vaseline works and I was sceptical but ... it does!!!

chocolateshoes · 05/02/2006 20:04

Help! More clarification needed about this Vaseline trick! Where exactly do you rub it?

hub2dee · 05/02/2006 20:25

Try inclining cot with books etc. at head end under feet.

We bought a hot vapour steamer machine from chemist (Honeywell brand). About 40 quid. runs all night, creating steam (has high and low settings; low was fine for us). It also has little chamber for Olbas so smell is dispersed much longer IYSWIM.

milkmum · 07/02/2006 10:12

Thank you everyone. We bought the VIVA vaporiser and so far so good!! She has slept through the night since Sunday night!!!! Also started using saline drops - with some reluctence, but i think they helped too.
Thanks again - You are all fab!
